Remove the dirt at Charge Office rank

EDITOR — Is it that people who live in Harare do not smell the pollution that goes on around Angwa Street and South Avenue, popularly known as Charge Office?

City authorities seem to have forgotten that they placed skip bins at the busy bus terminus. Nobody is collecting the bins and people are burning the refuse in the bins.

Given that there are nearby shops and a popular wholesaler who are dumping their refuse there as well, the bins are always burning.

I am sure it must be a real health hazard now as people who sneak in-between parked kombis have to negotiate their way past the smoke, choking and sputtering.

Something must be done and urgently too because so many people pass through Charge Office bus terminus.
Kombis from Seke, St Marys and Zengeza in Chitungwiza as well as Hatfield and Sunningdale use this bus rank.

During peak hours it is really a sorry sight as commuters plunge into the smoke unwittingly and have to cough their way out of the smoke at the same time trying to avoid being overrun by kombis.

It was a very brilliant idea to put the skip bins in that place in the first place but these have to be taken away for disposal with the rest of the city refuse.

The moment the bins fill up, people then find motivation in burning the rubbish instead.

There is dirt all around the skip bins and in the shelters. On windy days, it is real trouble for people who are forced to inhale concoctions of dust, dirt and other unknown things.

What are the City Fathers doing about this mess?

We need answers because we have a right to a clean environment.

My friend, you are very right to point out this situation. some time back, I tried to use the gents toilet near the ZIBF in Harare Gardens. It was a grim experience, having to pass in front of dirty street kids who stopped their soccer game on the lawn to watch us go in there. The floor was awash with water in which old faeces floated. I actually had to step on these disgusting things to reach the urinal, while hoisting my trouser legs to avoid soiling them. Sadly, I doubt that our mayor and his pals will do anything. They only go through the motions in order to collect their salaries at month end. Their salaries should be result-based, with a supervisor going around with a clipboard and saying, "Did you empty the skip bins at Charge Office? No?. Okay, your earn a demerit for that."
