MDC maps way forward after disputed polls

HARARE - MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and top party officials spent yesterday locked in a secret retreat meeting as the opposition leader rallied his troops for a way forward after disputed polls won by President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF.

Amid reports of deepening fissures in the ex-majority party caused by a poor showing in the July 31 polls, Tsvangirai is leaving nothing to chance as he is now regrouping but the strategies they agreed on were not yet public at the time of going to press yesterday.

Luke Tamborinyoka, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson confirmed the two-day retreat of the party’s top brass.

“The executive council meetings are regular but I cannot divulge much because I am not the party’s spokesperson. What I can tell you is that the MDC leader (Tsvangirai) whom I represent is also attending the meeting,” said Tamborinyoka.

Yesterday, in a Facebook post, Tsvangirai urged his supporters to remain resilient.

“Failure is not final. When life hands you a defeat, move on. Major setbacks often produce major comebacks. When grand opportunities are lost move on, beyond disappointment, there’s life. Beyond pain, there are lessons. LOOK! LEARN! LIVE! Live for a new day. There is hope for the future,” said Tsvangirai.

MDC spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora confirmed to the Daily News that the party is mapping the way forward.
“We are discussing the way forward ion view of developments in the country as well as in the region. We are determined to fight for out political space,” he said.

Although the MDC alleges that the July 31 polls were rigged, the courts and Sadc — guarantors of the past shaky coalition government, have already endorsed Mugabe as the duly elected leader leaving Tsvangirai and his MDC with few options but to regroup.

Within the MDC, there are reports that a group of officials are pushing for Tsvangirai’s resignation in the so-called leadership renewal plot.

Before the 2018 polls, the MDC will hold an elective congress in 2016, where Tsvangirai’s leadership qualities or credentials are likely to take centre stage.

Insiders told the Daily News yesterday that the MDC leader was aware that there are some within his party who are eying his post and the former Prime Minister is said to be battling to save the party from dividing into two camps.

Tsvangirai whose party has filed 39 poll petitions — paying an astronomical $390 000 for the cases to be heard, claims that the July 31 general elections, where his bitter rival Mugabe and his Zanu PF romped to a sweeping victory, were rigged.

Mugabe, in power since the attainment of independence from Britain, won 61 percent of the votes cast in the presidential election, giving him a renewed commanding position over the country he has controlled for the past 33 years.

His party, Zanu PF’s “super majority” of 158 of the 210 Parliament seats now enables it to make amendments to the new constitution and existing laws.

i think these meetings are mearnt to sniff out those who are secretly plotting the ouster of their losing president. I think the way forward is for Tsvangirayi to gracefully resign and let someone else lead the opposition party into the 2018 elections. There should be no room for chasing personal dreams. He has failed to land the presidency, whatever the reason, Period.

To hell, nobody will and can remove Morgan Tsvangirai except us the youths. We the youths have already endorsed Morgan Tsvangirai as our candidate to face whoever zanu pf will field after mugabe is gone. The issue of leadership in the MDC T is not up for grabs, contetable and questionable. So leave Morgan alone as our leader to face wether it is Joyce Mujuru or Mnangagwa, okay. It is us the youths who choose whom we want as the leader of the Party and therefore no one can ask us why?We give the direction of the Party as simple as that.

josefa chinotimba - 28 August 2013

These so called plots to remove Tswangirai are just lies from newspapers. For long have we been told of thes plots? We will support Morgen till Zim is FREEEEEE

"MDC maps way forward after disputed polls".. who disputed polls? Only a small %age of losers making noise does not make polls disputed when the majority have endorsed them. Ok you are in business.

LIKE IT OR NOT TSVANGIRAI and his MDC are the only ones to have beaten Mugabe and his Zanu party since independence . Not once but twice in a row .. how about that. Mugabe since received his "LOOSERS'CROWN" for the second time in a row. Thanks to his Grip on All Gvt Institutions and Violence .LOL NGAVATONGE TIONE WANANCHI

Have you ever thought to yourselves ladies and gentlemen. MDC-T weakest link when it comes to everything is Morgan Tsvangirai at the same the strongest point for Zanu PF is Mugabe. In my own analysis there is no-one between Mnangagwa or Mai Mujuru who realy suits to fit his shoes however becuase of age these two can be a replacement to someone who has the brilliance and leadership skills to take Zanu forward. On the other hand MDC-T needs a change of leadership Tsvangirai or Biti are not suitable they are emotional and reactive. Sometimes we need leaders with the ability to respond not react which has been the tendency of these two. In my view MDC-T would do themselves a favour if they started grooming Chamisa because he will have the support of one of the critical group of people in this country. The next election will not be about jobs or hunger Zanu will get this out of the way so it will be about moral integrity and Christians will have a say in this vote

Democratic - 28 August 2013

The mapping needed in Zimbabwe by the MDC is on how to take power away from Mugabe who is refusing to hand over power after several loses to Tsvangirai. If that mapping forward is not looking at that end result, then truly it would be a case of trying to punch a shadow image in total darkness no matter how powerful the punch is, the end result will hurt all trying to destroy shadows of misery in Zimbabwe.

It is ZANU PF's wish is to have Tsvangs removed from power, because Tsvangs has been winning votes ever since MDC was formed. ZANU PF has been stealing votes each time we have an election. So all those who are baying for Tsvangirai's removal from the leadership of MDC T are messengers sent from ZANU PF to dislodge Tsvangs from MDC T's leadership. So all of you who want Tsvangirai to step down , we know that you are from ZANU PF and you want to crush MDC T into oblivion. ZANU PF knows that if Tsvangirai is dislodged from power , MDC T will dissintergrate into pieces, so we urge Tsvangirai to stay in power and keep on and on and on fighting the good fight.

Surely if the so called meetings are being held to remove Tsvangirai from Power,we the youths will block, nullify or it will be a bloody bath.We are warning wether it is these zanu pf goons who want to remove our leader and purporting to be MDC T supporters to stop it immediately.Tsvangirai is going nowhere,he will stay put until he dislodges zanu pf from power. Please be warned,Tsvangirai is going nowhere.

josefa chinotimba - 28 August 2013

Democratic why do you think Mugabe is the strongest. Who else has been tried in ZanuPF. He is not a strong link he is an abused link.

maita - 28 August 2013

Whoever is taunting Tsvangirai's ouster is ZANUpf at heart and should go and taunt the same slogan to Mugabe

chokwadi - 28 August 2013

The MDC-T and Tsvangirai should not waste time waiting for some 2016 congress to change their leadership. Tsvangson should at the end of these two days of meetings just step down and let an extraordinary elective congress be called. He and his team have failed dismally in their quest to unseat zanu. Waitng until after 2016 to start restrategising will lead to a worse disaster in 2018 than that just experienced. Tsvangson should just go

Sikhosana - 28 August 2013

Truth be told, Mugabe never won an election since 2000. he knew he was facing disgrace so he used everything within his power to quell the shame he was going to face. mugabe is a shame and will always be and will go to his grave a shame. Tsvangirai is here to stay like or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ATZ - 28 August 2013

Most of the commentators are zanu guys who want to weaken MDCT. We can see that all these comments are coming from an enemy. There is no reason for people to remove Tsvangirai because he is a winner since MDC was formed. The truth is ZANU used all these annihilation measures because they saw that Tsvangirai is winning all elections. During those days when there were Zanu ndonga only, we can actually discovered that people were not intimidated or tricked to vote for ZANU. The truth is TSVANGIRAI is the only LION of ZANU in this country so they FEAR him. Even though they will be another person it will be worse because the problem is not about Tsvangirai but about rigging. VIVA TSVANGIRAI.

Boss - 28 August 2013

It's laughable that MDC-T are talking of re-grouping. There's no way MDC-T will ever win against a ZanuPF military dictatorship in the future. The MDCs have tried many times and failed but they keep using the same useless formula to fight a military dictatorship. These MDC guys are wasting political space. The MDCs are worse than useless. How can you be a politician or journalist in Zimbabwe and not see the bleeding obvious that civilian parties will never ever win against a ZanuPF military dictatorship? Some journalists are saying it was wrong poll strategy - what nonsense! How can you have the right strategy against the military assisted by police and militias? And where village heads and traditional chiefs are coerced by ZanuPF to coerce their subjects to vote for ZanuPF on the pain of some punishment? MDCs think if they call a spade a spade then they will be labelled “sell-outs” or “rhodies” but then a political party of civilians cannot overcome a party of military men assisted by state police and militias. MDCs think it is “unpatriotic” or taboo to say ZanuPF is a military dictatorship. But ZanuPF is a military dictatorship: there are no two ways to it. If ZanuPF is not a military dictatorship what is a military dictatorship? I have been warning the MDCs since 1999 about the stupidity of treating ZanuPF as a civilian party but nobody has taken heed. Tsvangirai garnering more votes than Mugabe in the first round in 2008 was a FLUKE which ZanuPF military is never going to happen again. ZanuPF military went to sleep in the 2008 mock election first round - they thought a split MDC was a walkover.

Chin - 28 August 2013

I will through my weight on Tsvangirai. His hands are clean. He has to rule this country like what Mandela did. He is our hero.

Mutape - 28 August 2013

In the above commnet the penultimate sentence should read," Tsvangirai garnering more votes than Mugabe in the first round in 2008 was a FLUKE which ZanuPF military is never going to LET happen again. ZanuPF military went to sleep in the 2008 mock election first round - they thought a split MDC was a walkover."

Chin - 28 August 2013

Chin what is your solution then on these dictatorial rule?

Taf - 28 August 2013

@Taf - an opportunity was lost after the violent 2008 when the MDCs should have informed Mbeki, Sadc, UN, AU, EU and the rest of the world that Zimbabwe was under the grip of a brutal ZanuPF military dictatorship. Then the whole world would have known what the country is going through and treated ZanuPF as they are doing with a similar military dictatorship in Madagascar. Elections are meant to be contests between civilian parties not civilian parties against military dictatorships. The MDCs in Zimbabwe are trying to push water uphill - impossible. Can the MDCs not see that? Why are they in politics?

Chin - 28 August 2013

It's now too late to tell the world that Zimbabwe is under the grip of a ZanuPF military dictatorship especially after the loss on the 31 July - people will think it is now a case of sour grapes which is why 2008 was the best time when at least Tsvangirai had garnered more votes than Mugabe. Tsvangirai should have driven home his advantage then but instead he threw ZanuPF andd Mugabe a life-line. This has now come back to bite MDC-T and Tsvangirai on their bottoms.

Chin - 28 August 2013

ZANU PF did not win any elections from 2000 up to now. ZANU PF cheats in elections and they beat up people to force them to vote for them. ZANU PF knows that MDC T will win if NIKUV is not allowed to rig the voters' roll. ZANU PF will cheat in broad daylight to win because they own NIKUV ,the ballot boxes and ZEC. Also the Chinese and the Russian governments support ZANU PF and the Russians and the Chinese are behind these ZANU PF tyrants. MDC T won elections in the past and present by honest means but ZANU PF always steal and cheat in elections . MDC T won elections because they represent the millions of poor people in Zimbabwe , the youth, and the ordinary Zimbabweans, whereas, ZANU PF only caters for the ZANU PF MPs (who are now all filthy rich businessmen and women who own farms , mines and chicken inns etc), ZANU PF also caters for the few top army generals and securocrats, the war vets and millitia and the traditional chiefs. If we count the people who ZANU PF represent , we would probably come up with approximately about only 10,000 people and these 10,000 people are the people who are now ruling Zimbabwe with an iron grip, and ZANU PF is just like the minority whites who ruled us in the past who were ruthless just like ZANU PF people now and, ZANU PF has the soldiers and the guns. So this lot will rig and rig elections again and again to stop MDC T from taking power. ZANU PF is only in power to protect their mines and farms and chicken inns and their dairy farms, that is why they have the army and the police on their side, to protect their riches. If Zimbabweans protest, they will be ruthlessly and brutally massacared by the Mugabe regime and we will find that the AU , SADC and the Russians and the Chinese will praise Mugabe for the killings.

Police - 28 August 2013

The MDC defeat was a result of breath-taking incompetence on the part of the party especially the leader, Tsvangirai. The way forward is for him to go!

Wilbert Mukori - 28 August 2013

timba - 28 August 2013

PAMBERI NATSVANGIRAI GUYS

timba - 28 August 2013

ZANU PF messengers want Tsvangirai to go because they are afraid of his popularity. So MDC T must "sunga dzisimbe" (hold tight on the way forward and do not lose grip, keep going Tsvangirai). These people who are baying for Tsvangirai to go are ZANU PF , so MDC T must keep the fight going. SADC , AU and the African leaders will not help Zimbabweans, so Zimbabweans this time will get stronger and keep on fighting for democracy. When Tsvangirai wins , all the ZANU PF will not be thrown away to the dogs, no they will be needed to help as advisers by MDC T because MDC T will do reconcilliation for the way forward. Zimbabweans want peace not instability. Civil rights activists must also help Tsvangirai to mobilise Zimbabweans country wide. MDC T must start campaigning for freedom from ZANU PF tyrants from now . The road will be tough, there will be beatings by ZANU PF millitia and political arrests by partisan police but MDC T must on going with the fight to free Zimbabweans from the thieving ZANU PF dictators with their securocrats. The whole lot are corrupt to the core and they are oppressing Zimbabweans so that they ZANU PF continue to steal state resources and funds for their own pockets. Tsvangirai musaneta, musaneta, musaneta, keep on the fight for freedom from the theiving ZANU PF tyrants!!!!

OPPsition - 28 August 2013

Morgan has had three changes at leading the MDC to victory @ failed each time therefore the way forward must include giving someone else a go. Otherwise by clinging to the MDC presidency he himself is becoming a problem. How can we accuse Mugabe of staying too long when our own MDC is doing the same. For the good of democracy, party & country Morgan need to gracefully stand down before 2018. None of the party leaders in Zim has ever gracefully handed power & why???

Mrehwa - 29 August 2013

Tsvangirai is a dictator just like Mugabe. The only difference with Mugabe is tsvangirai has undocumented added on and chihure too.no one in their right senses will vote tsvangirai. He changes his mind the same way he changes women he bed.poor thing tsvangirai,if he is democratic like he preaches fourteen years as a leader, what's the difference with Mugabe.

Dudzai - 29 August 2013

It is another demonstration of lack of tact because the people Morgan spent time locked in with strategising with are the same people who have let down the peoples project.God bless Zimbabwe

brother Beyond - 29 August 2013

MDC-T needs an intelligent strategist who thinks outside the box. Morgan does not have any of these traits hence the reason why has been floored by Mugabe several times if not always.

elisha muzonzini - 29 August 2013

The MDC T youths have already endorsed Mr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai as then Party's President, and he will face Joyce Mujuru anywhere, wherever and anytime.Mr Tsvangirai is staying put.

josefa chinotimba - 29 August 2013

Endorsing Tsvangirai is a mere waste of time, he is a "Legend of the Seas". We want someone with a fresh mind at the helm of MDC.

Tswangirai presided over his downfall by splitting MDC into instead of intergrating the party. He is living to regret and his future seems bleak

talawunda - 29 August 2013

The MDC-T youths are "very focused indeed" while they love their dear leader they don't want anyone to ask why he should continue being at the helm. Phew! Real democracy indeed. I hope you didn't borrow a leaf from the ZANU-PF guys you pretend to despise. Tswancry lost because while Old Bob was busy having an election he was busy having an erection. It's better to look for a fresh set of five senses in the MDC_-T ranks who will have an election with either Joyce or Emmerson in 2018 and not an erection. And by the way don't forget that Tswancry is also "getting younger" (+/-61) now by the time he finally learns how to rig as well he would be as old as Bob himself. I thought you guys always denigrated Bob because of his old age. Fortunately all of you foul mouthed people will one day get old just like Bob assuming HIV/ AIDS does consign you to your grave very fast. Your party members seems to enjoy playing "hide the sausage" game with the fairer sex. Bob is lucky to have lived that long wena ke? What worries every Zimbo is the issue of bread and butter. We are also concerened about how this bread shall be baked and where it shall be baked. If it is the truth that elections were stolen and rigged from the generality of us those who shortchanged the people's voice will dismally fail and obviously pay for their sins but if we mandated them as they claim then they will suceeed. Ony time will tell. Our primary concern at this particular juncture is bread on our table, in the form of improved health system, effective educational systems, jobs, political, social, and economic freedom. Let us stop this sanction song and concentrate more on developing the lives of Zimbabweans. Let us not chase away our kith and kin on the false pretext that they are agents of our enemies. If so then lets embrace them and teach them the right path of patriotism. Why should we worry about a group of people that are resented and rejected by people and won only a few seats in parliament.
