Well done Mbada

HARARE - Once again, mining giant, Mbada Diamonds has come to the rescue of the nation by generously donating to the successful hosting of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly in Victoria Falls.

We are reliably informed that Mbada Diamonds pumped in more than $2,5 million to help our broke government stage this mega-event which is being co-hosted by Zambia.

We are aware that Mbada Diamonds has been acting as the big brother in terms of social responsibility together with giant companies like Delta Corporation and Econet Wireless among other big players and we applaud their efforts.

Mbada Diamonds has assisted in sport, health and education, but this one-off mammoth event has distinguished them among other diamond companies who are not contributing anything to Treasury.

Why is it that it is only Mbada Diamonds among the six or seven companies mining diamonds in Chiadzwa which is contributing significantly to Treasury and to such events as the internationally acclaimed UNWTO?
Where is Anjin, where is Marange among other companies in Chiadzwa?

Why don’t they emulate Mbada Diamonds?

Other companies that have contributed immensely towards the general assembly include mobile giant Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, Telecel Zimbabwe, NetOne, TelOne, Liquid Telecoms Zimbabwe and Kanondo Safaris among others and we say thank you.

Tourism used to be the third biggest foreign currency earner in the country and we hope that such efforts from Mbada Diamonds and other companies that made this event a success will help re-establish our country as one of the best tourist destinations in the country.

A Tourism ministry official we are quoting elsewhere in this newspaper aptly summed it and said:
“Mbada realised that the successful hosting of the event will bring positive development to our country’s tourism sector. This is because the UNWTO represents public sector tourism bodies, from most countries in the world and the publication of its data makes possible comparisons of the flow and growth of tourism on a global scale.”

President Robert Mugabe, who officially opened the UNWTO assembly in Victoria Falls on Sunday, should work with his new government to ensure that tourism reaches its full potential.

We also hope that the efforts by major sponsors like Mbada and Econet are being recognised and they must be given credit for their huge sacrifices at a time when most companies are choking.

Mugabe must also face the other diamond mining companies to explain why they are not contributing to national development when they are extracting precious national resources on a daily basis.
