Man, 57, rapes granddaughter, 8

BULAWAYO - A 57-year-old grandfather who sexually abused his eight-year-old granddaughter will spend more than a decade in prison after he was convicted by a Hwange magistrate’s court.

Sebastian Nyoni of Chief Nekatambe in Hwange pleaded not guilty to rape charges but was convicted and sentenced to an effective 12-year jail term when he appeared before magistrate Dambudzo Malunga.

Handing down judgment, magistrate Malunga said: “A long custodial sentence is appropriate in the circumstances to send a message to society that the courts will continue to protect young girls from adult sexual predators like Nyoni”.

In mitigation, Nyoni said the allegations were fabricated as his wife did not like him anymore.

The court proved that on Christmas Day last year the complainant was warming herself near the fire place in the kitchen hut when Nyoni entered.

He then ordered his granddaughter to bend down without telling her what he intended to do.

When the complainant reportedly refused to take the order, Nyoni grabbed her hand and forcibly undressed her before raping her once ignoring her screams for help.

Coincidentally Nyoni’s wife got into the kitchen where she found her husband trying to pull back his pair of trousers.

She then asked him what he was doing but he failed to give a satisfactory answer.

When she interviewed her granddaughter, she pointed out that she had been raped.

A police report was made leading to Nyoni’s arrest.
