Clerk up for defrauding UZ of $65 000

HARARE - A Chitungwiza man who allegedly connived with a University of Zimbabwe accounts clerk to defraud the tertiary institution of more than $60 000 has been arraigned before the courts.

Lovemore Munhenga, 38, allegedly defrauded UZ by depositing undue salaries into his CBZ and CABS bank accounts respectively and then shared the spoils with his accomplice.

Munhenga, who was not asked to plead, was remanded in custody to September 5 by magistrate Anita Tshuma, who advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

The court heard that sometime in September 2009, Munhenga conspired with Gumisai Jani, an accounts clerk at UZ to defraud the university by depositing some undue salaries into Munhenga’s CABS and CBZ bank accounts.

It is the State’s case that during the period extending September 29, 2009 to July 26 this year, Jani, in pursuant of their plot, allegedly used his password to gain access into the university’s Bellina Payroll System.

Allegations are that Jani then electronically inputted and dispatched undue salaries amounting to
$65 132.92 into Munhenga’s bank accounts.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleges that the money was deposited as salaries for full-time UZ employees namely Arnold Mhunga and Tinashe Nyathi, despite the two having left their employment at UZ after their contracts had expired.

After allegedly depositing the said salaries, Jani would inform Munhenga and the two would then withdraw the money from the mentioned banks and share the loot.
