UNWTO overwhelms Vic Falls

HARARE - All is set for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly in Victoria Falls, with hotels and city lodges fully booked throughout the duration of the event.

The premier tourism event, which is being co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia, has attracted thousands of delegates and holiday-makers from all over the world, with accommodation now scarce in the resort town.

Big hotels such as Kingdom Hotel,  Rainbow Hotel and small lodges were by Friday evening fully booked, with some visitors resorting to pitching up tents to ensure that they attend the all-important tourism event in Africa.

Restaurants visited by the Daily News crew, seemed overwhelmed by the huge turnout for the conference which is set to start today and run for the entire week.

At the conference venue, last minute touches were being made, with accreditation of delegates being finalised ahead of its official opening by President Robert Mugabe scheduled for today.

Security is also on high alert, with police details deployed along the highway leading to the venue and into the town centre.
