Fathers should be responsible

EDITOR — I urge the incoming government to institute stricter measures against fathers who default on paying maintenance for their offspring.

It is a sad sight at the civil courts everyday as women fight to get money to look after their children from their fathers.

Some fathers are not taking their responsibilities and it is high time stricter measures are taken against them.

Surely, how can one refuse to look after a child they fathered?

Women are always at the receiving end as they are left to fend for the children and themselves.

These men should be accountable for their actions and it is up to the authorities to take stricter measures.

Issues between the parents should not stop the fathers to look after their children yet in most of these cases it is meant to fix the women for some reasons.

These are innocent children that are being deprived of their rights and as such the new government should act to protect these children as Zimbabwe is a signatory to the international charter on protection of children’s rights.

To the men refusing to look after their children shame on you, act like real men and assume your role as providers for your children. — Portia
