Harare businessman shoots girlfriend, kills self

HARARE - A Harare car dealer, Irvine Mereki, allegedly shot dead his girlfriend before using the same gun to commit suicide.

Their bodies were found at their Avondale apartment yesterday morning, police confirmed.

Charity Charamba, the national police spokesperson yesterday said: “Yes I can confirm the death of two people in Avondale but will call you back for more details when police officers attending the scene appraise us,” she said.

Police sources who attended the scene told the Daily News yesterday that used gun cartridges were found besides the body of the businessman while the wife was found lying dead wrapped in blankets  — a suggestion that the entrepreneur probably shot his girlfriend before taking his own life.

According to police sources, the maid discovered the deceased couple in the morning after she knocked on the bedroom door but could not get a response.

After discovering the bodies, she alerted police officers who immediately rushed to the scene.

Friends of the late businessman told the Daily News that he left his Grange home on Monday evening to take his gardener’s child to hospital.

After dropping the gardener and his child at hospital, he proceeded to his girlfriend’s apartment.
