Youth Games officially opened

BULAWAYO - The 11th edition of the Zimbabwe National Youth Games was officially opened by the Resident Minister and Governor of Bulawayo Province Cain Mathema at White City Stadium on Sunday.

Mathema described the games as a dress rehearsal for the hosting of the sixth edition of the Zone VI Youth Games set to be hosted by Zimbabwe in December next year.

“As Government we are happy to note that we have managed to host these games on an annual basis,” Mathema said.

“All the ten provinces have been afforded an opportunity to host these games on a rotational basis thus contributing to the attainment of balanced development of sport in the country.”

“We are now reaping the fruits of the project and yet a lot of work still needs to be done like the hosting of the sixth edition of the Zone VI Youth Games and my message is do not take off your feet of the pedal as another big project is on its way.”

Present during the opening ceremony was the principal director in the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture Paul Damasane, Sport and Recreation Commission board members, Zimbabwe Olympic Committee leadership, and Bulawayo City Council Town Clerk Middleton Nyoni among other dignitaries.

Games will get underway today with individual sports heats and qualifying rounds at various venues.

Harare are the defending champions after romping to victory in last year’s edition of the games that were held in Bindura.
