Maphosa dominates junior bodybuilding

HARARE – Young Donald Maphosa is the man to beat in the country’s junior bodybuilding fraternity having dominated the two premier contests held this year.

The 20-year-old Scorpion Gym athlete is a proud holder of Mr Iron Man junior title he won in Kadoma in April.

Just last week he added another title to his name after he exhibited the best chiselled frame to be crowned junior Musclemania at Ochi City.

The title came with a 32” plasma television, medal, trophy and certificate as the organisers ensured that Mr and Ms Musclemania event remains the best rewarding contest on the land.

Maphosa beat Reginald Pasara, who won a deep freezer for coming in second place, while third- placed Tinashe Gandari took home a food hamper, T-shirt and a G-tel mobile phone.

“I’m feeling good and I’m going to train hard because I will be moving over to the seniors next year,” Maphosa told the Daily News.

“The prize is awesome. I never thought I would own a state of the art TV at this age. As a junior I’m really grateful for this at least other juniors will be inspired by such rewards to take up bodybuilding.”

The budding hulk said he takes after his father who was also a bodybuilder. Maphosa’s secret to success is very simple as ABC.

“The secret really is training hard and eating well,” he revealed. “When we draw near competitions I eat high protein food such as a chicken breast, turkey, egg white and fish.

“The intake of carbohydrates should be very minimal at this stage and in any case the only carbs you need is for your energy to train while consumption of fats should be at zero percent.”

Currently, Maphosa is doing a personal training course after which he would want to ‘spend’ his life in the gym.

Meanwhile, during the same night, veteran bodybuilder Mwako Mwale won the male wheelchair category and got a residential stand in Damafalls.

Pearson Tazvivinga and Elford Moyo finished second and third respectively.

The women wheelchair title went to Emma Chiduku, who silenced Margaret Bangajena and Sophia Mupasi to second and third place respectively.

The Ms Musclemania Figure went to Helen Costa, Ruvimbo Musere was in second place while Regina Jonga settled for third best.

The highlight of the night, Mr Muslcemania went to Champion “Mbewe” Chienderamwano who dethroned previous holder Victor “The Beast” Hungwe, first runner-up and reigning Mr Iron Man Vincent “Vince Cutter” Kandiero came third.
