Jailed Mutodi's troubles mount

HARARE - Incarcerated businessman-cum-singer Energy Mutodi,  currently in remand prison, risks being dragged to court again by his band members for breaching contracts he entered with them.

Mutodi is alleged to have breached a five-year-contract he entered with  Mutodi Express band members including ex-Utakataka Express chanter Gift ‘Shiga Shiga’ Katulika and bassist Spencer Khumulani.

Khumulani told the Daily News the five-year contract bars them from working with other bands.

“The contract stated that Mutodi will pay our monthly rentals while we are still building the band,” Khumulani said.

“Now, Mutodi has since ceased paying our monthly rentals since things are not well for him. We are now experiencing hunger... he has breached the contract so if there is a need, we will drag him to court.”

Owing to the topsy-turvy state of things, Katulika has featured on the upcoming project of raunchy dancer Beverly Sibanda of Sexy Angels.

He says he had no choice but to team up with the pole dancer as a way of making ends meet. He said since his boss is languishing in remand prison in Mutare for allegedly swindling thousands of desperate home-seekers nationwide through his company National Housing Development Trust (NHDT), finances have been tight.

“I featured on Bev’s forthcoming album to be released next month and I am in this to eke a living,” said Katulika.

Mutodi had lured a number of Utakataka Express band members with hefty packages, including top-of-the-range vehicles, payment of monthly rentals, among other benefits.

As of now the entire group is pondering their next move since the Mutodi deal is stuttering.

Mutodi, a former high school teacher and author, has three sungura albums under his belt and these are Sekawo Mbichana, Magetsi Ngaabake and the latest Kuita Kuri Kwenyu, an album inspired by the nasty relationship with his ex-wife Tariro Chirende.

Mutodi has been mired in a nasty divorce with Chirende whom he accused in court of infecting him with a sexually transmitted infection, a charge she strenuously denied.

Trouble brewed for the flamboyant artiste, when he launched a parliamentary bid for Goromonzi South Constituency amid spirited resistance from the party.

After being dumped by Zanu PF in primary elections, Mutodi reportedly failed to sit for his University of Zimbabwe MBA examinations following his arrest on charges of defrauding civil servants among other struggling citizens.
