Engineer up for $20 000 fraud

HARARE - A site engineer with Drawcard Construction was on Friday arraigned before the courts on fraud charges after he allegedly concealed more than $20 000 from his employer.

Sikhalela Thako Sikhalela, 43, was remanded to August 19 on $100 bail and ordered to surrender his passport as part of his bail ruling.

It is the state’s case that between June 2012 and February 2013, Sikhalela allegedly hired out equipment to Proconstruct Contractors namely tipper trucks, an excavator, a water bowser, a grader and bow front loader and a vibrator, with a compressor.

Sikhalela was allegedly paid $18 100 for the equipment but he did not disclose the deal to Drawcard.
He was also contracted by Zimra Beitbridge to provide equipment and received $5 642 as payment.

The court heard on another occasion, Sikhalela received $2 300 from Redan Petroleum Beitbridge for a tipper truck and excavator he had hired out to them.

On April 24, the offence came to light when a routine audit was carried out and revealed that Sikhalela used Drawcard’s logo to deceive clients into believing the transactions were done on behalf of the company.

Sikhalela allegedly committed the offence while he was in charge of the construction of the NSSA Hotel in Beitbridge, whose tender had been awarded to his employer.

Drawcard is in the business of construction and hiring out of plant equipment to individuals and companies.
