Conman remanded in custody

HARARE - A Harare man who swindled a desperate Gweru home-seeker of her money after lying that he could get the woman a stand spent the night in prison yesterday.

A shocked Tinashe Mukwidzi was escorted back to the holding cells after magistrate Anita Tshuma ruled that he would know his fate today.

The 39-year-old is the founder of Standard Houses Delivery Trust, which is in the business of land developing.

Allegations are that in August last year, the complainant (name withheld) met one of Mukwidzi’s employees Linalisa Bususu in Gweru who told him that their company was in the business of selling residential stands.

The man allegedly got interested and took the physical address of Mukwidzi’s trust.

It is the state’s case that the complainant went to Mukwidzi’s trust where he was shown different stands on a map and he chose one situated in Msasa Park, after which Mukwidzi showed the man stand number 920 in the same residential area.

The court heard the complainant was satisfied with the land he was shown and deposited $13 000 before Mukwidzi drafted an agreement of sale on the property.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleges that when the man started to enquire about the title deeds to the stand, Mukwidzi kept on giving him excuses.

When the man realised that he had been duped, Mukwidzi had relocated his offices and was no longer in touch with his client.

The man reported the matter in February this year, but Mukwidzi was only arrested on August 6.
