Poll dispute: Candidates recount how 'rigging' took place

HARARE - Losing MDC parliamentary candidates have opened up, recounting how Zanu PF  “stole the elections right in front of our eyes” as the opposition party mounts its court challenge to the July 31 poll results.

Although Mugabe was officially declared the winner with an unassailable 61 percent of the total vote cast against Tsvangirai’s paltry 34 percent, the MDC has said it will go to the courts within the next 14 days to contest the poll outcome.

Yesterday, the losing MPs flooded the party headquarters, Harvest House, and took turns to recount how voters were either frogmarched to polling stations by Zanu PF shock troopers or were forced to claim illiteracy.

Some uniformed forces and recruits, according to the MDC losing candidates, voted twice while unidentified men in overcoats trooped to polling stations in areas such as Gutu on the eve of the election allegedly with marked ballot papers that favoured Zanu PF.

MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai has already declared the elections “null and void” and yesterday the losers presented what they said was evidence to buttress their president’s stance.

MDC candidate and former Zanu PF MP Tracey Mutinhiri, whose bid to reclaim her Marondera East seat fell through, claimed that the election was predetermined by the secretive printing of ballots as well as the bussing of people from other constituencies.

“Zanu PF had an upper hand in the just ended polls, they sent people to instil fear among voters and also bring fake ink,” Mutinhiri said. “Several people voted twice and the number of people who voted in these elections did not tally with the number of people in the constituency.

This was a sham election which was rigged in front of our eyes and the ballot paper that was used was questionable, it was so thin”.

Ralph Magunje, who was eying the Magunje seat, chillingly recounted how people in military uniform criss-crossed the sun-baked roads of the impoverished constituency drumming support for Mugabe.

“A few days before elections, some soldiers were moving around reminding people of the dire consequences if they voted for the MDC and on the polling day recruits also voted with us under strict supervision from their bosses,” he said.

MDC losing legislator for Hurungwe West, Wilson Makanyaire, also raised concern over the number of people who were assisted during the just ended polls.

“There was massive rigging in Hurungwe West, people were forced to vote using Zanu PF membership cards and not the proper national registration documents,” he said.

The poll’s credibility has been further called into question by the resignation of one of the nine official electoral commissioners. Mkhululi Nyathi quit over “the manner” in which the polls “were proclaimed and conducted”.

Hundreds of thousands of unregistered people used fake registration slips obtained from Zanu PF officials throughout the country.

In the rural areas, villagers were force marched to polling stations by village heads who threatened that if they did not vote for Zanu PF, their hands would be cut off in 2008 style.

The village heads told the largely illiterate rural folk that Tsvangirai and his MDC went for elections confident of a landslide victory but ignorant of where the ballot papers were printed and without the voters’ roll.

A South African investigating company Nasini Projects claims it is 99 percent sure that the just ended polls which ended the four year coalition government, were rigged.

Nasini Projects claims a delicate ballot paper was used to rig the election alleging the ballot had a watermark  X against Mugabe and Zanu PF’s name such that if any ink is placed on the paper, the substance on the paper will react and remove the ink and activate the watermarked X into print.

Teachers who took part in the ballot counting process claimed that some of the Xs were so faint.

Teachers from Uzumba, who also came to the MDC headquarters, also recalled how they were forced to profess illiteracy at named polling stations.

“We were taken to a clinic where our hands were bandaged and then taken to the polling station where we were assisted to vote by known war veterans,” said a teacher who declined to be named.

The MDC and the African Union (AU) have both raised concerns at the high number of people who were assisted to vote.

“I was given a torch which had the face of Mugabe and told by the presiding officers to take the picture after I had voted,” claimed  another teacher from Uzumba.

Victims of the 2008 brutal presidential election run-off were targeted in Uzumba, which is widely regarded a Zanu PF stronghold.

Zanu PF activists allegedly recorded names of people who voted, according to the MDC.

The overprinting of ballot papers, high number of assisted voters and some being turned away that was raised by MDC candidates was also raised by the AU.

Ex-Nigerian President Olesugun Obasanjo, who headed the AU mission, also questioned why the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) had to print 8.7 million ballot papers, 35 percent more than the number of registered voters.

International best practices put the overprinting of ballot papers between 5-10 percent not 35 percent and this according to the AU, raises concerns over the accountability of unused ballot papers.

Although the AU, Sadc and Zec have declared that the elections were peaceful, Luke Tamborinyoka, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson said the MDC is building a strong case to challenge the poll results.

What the people of Zimbabwe want is the tool that will enable them to remove Mugabe from office. That tool is the one that our leaders should provide to the masses. The good news is that Mugabe alone, will never be able to feed his dogs and croccodiles that are protecting him and sooner they will eat him. Before 2008 elections, Mugabe was about to be killed by his own guards had it not been the GNU. This time around yes Mt Tsvangirai is right that his MDC must not be part of the Government. This should trully see his own men around him pointing the guns at him and not the innocent masses.

Rubbish, that is typical of losers, it was impossible to vote twice, these foolish claims of rigging just prove what sort of idiots we were going to have in government if the MDC had won. Don't take people of zimbabwe for granted. I FOR SURE NEVER BOTHERED TO VOTE IN 2008, BUT THIS TIME , i voted Mugabe not because i like him very much, but JUST WANTED TO AVOID AN IDIOT LIKE Tsvangirai landing the highest office in the country on a puppet ticket.

To the MDC-T leadership (especially Morgan R. Tsvangirai). Either put your balls in the right place and do politics or close the MDC and form a church. You cannot watch your supporters being intimidated and suffering violence while u are talking nonviolence. Yes, you should not initiate violence but authorise and organise your people to defend themselves and their rights by all means possible. If this is too much for u then step down and let someone else lead the MDC.

SADC and AU Missions were infiltrated by local security agents who were coordinating the election fraud. They posed as foreigners from SADC countries. WE identified one guy ZIMBOS who was saying is from Mauritius but we know him well (name, father, mother, dob) They moved around in SADC AU MARKED CARS PUT ON OBSERVER JACKETS. THE FRAUD WAS SO COORDINATE THAT AU AND SADC REPORTS are very much BLINDED on what happened as they "were to getting the FALSE events from its teams on the field & genuine observers did not cover fraud bases. WAKE UP AU and SADC YOU ARE DEALING WITH clever cheat. ZIM ELECTIONS RESULT IS FRAUD that is IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE RIGGING scam. WHY VOTE RECORDING SERIAL NUMBERS? INTIMIDATION. Am together with all the normal and level headed Zimbabweans who were crying for change. It very sad that some misguided elements of our society in the name of Zanu PF had the maximum energy to help rig the elections . To make matters worse some pseudo men of God are at their loudest endorsing such a shame poll. Mwari ndewedu tese vakomana , we shall see if you can kip on rigging to the point of rigging God our Father who created the heavens and the earth. Yes do it tione!

those who are out of Zimbabwe are the ones saying elections were rigged,USA and EU included;these do not know real facts on the ground, just examples here, there are about 276 000 resettled families who want to safeguard what they got together with all family members and relatives.Just to be conservative each family has about 4 eligible voters and these voted ZANU PF.There is Employee ownership schemes under Indeginisation,eg 300 000 employees got shares, they have families who are eligible voters as well and on average they are 4members each family,to safe guard their shares all voted Zanu PF.There are those who have not yet received their shares but they know for certain that if Zanu PF wins elections they will get their shares, lets about 250 000 employees plus family members all vote for Zanu PF.If we go by these simple calculations you will know for certain that all MDC formations were going to loose elections bcoz of these facts plus some other factors not mentioned here.

We the people did not have any confidence in the whole electoral process. The election was a Sham and everyone knows it. I guess SADC is tired of problem child Zimbabwe, so that's why they are endorsing it for expediency purposes

mukuru - 5 August 2013

tsvangirai lost because of overconfidence,he did not have a real counter rigging strategy other than exposing the rigging tactics by zanu and also they relied heavily on baba jukwa for these exposures…what mdc should have done was from the start to inspire people to be determined to register as voters no matter the frustrations from zec and also to inspire people to vote and do everything possible to vote even if it means to travel to the ward they would have been told to go and vote.the mdc ads focused mainly on their manifesto which was good but in the light of the knowledge that there was going to be rigging ,they should have emphasised more on getting a determined large voter turn out.i believe most of the urban people quickly gave up on registering and quickly gave up on voting.

a very sad realisation: that we've been violently repressed, economically disenfranchised and disabled, banished into exile,... and now tom-foolled in broad daylight. poverty is sure on the return. and HIV. and typhoid will forever in kuwadzana entrench its rule as in avondale. shame! the small, small microadvantages that the devil was allowed right from the day of the infamous GPA accumulated eventually into this catasrophe, lord've mercy. the funny thing is, under ZANU- PF, Mpilo Hospital, Mutare General, Pare, Beatrice Infectious will remain critically understaffed. At that time we the poor will have to swallow the angry nurses'toungue lash, our ill health notwithstanding. Robert, Tendai and Welshman will always go to top medics for a headache. Analyzing the results MDC did cost itself by failing to reconcile within its splinter formation. Approximately 10 constituencies could have been theirs if the only they had reconciled MDC T and Ncube, in some areas add both T and Ncube votes they were far greater than ZANU's. Most people assume these are the same parties and just put an X. Hence Tsvangirai must start reconciling with his splinter group and have 1 MDC if he is to continue to be relevant......Zanu Pf l hope will apply the education they acquired during the GNU for the best interest of the pple. Anything less will be detrimental to the future of Zim.....

Winners and losers we are all Zimbabweans. I agree with first five contributors above. There is always joy in success and despair in losing or failing, let that election be an event, and be water under the bridge, and let us now begin the process of building our country, losers and winners. There is no pride in violence. Violence destroys. Look at Syria, Iraq, Egypt or Libya!!! Is there anything to emulate in these countries? Has demonstration achieved anything in these countries? How my young and vibrant lives have been lost in Syria alone? More 120 000 innocent lives lost in Syria alone. The once beautiful cities have been turned into ruins. I know for sure that my Zimbabwean brothers and sisters are peace lovers. We will rally behind our God ordained leaders in building our country. We challenge our army and police and our God given president to clean corruption from every corner of our country. No Zimbabwe shall pay any kick back for a service. There shall never be any queues at the registrar's office for ID, passport or birth and death certificate. Perpetrators of corruption should be locked up in prisons and prison keys melted. Tenders for government projects should open and transparent, no rigging of tenders please, job positions should be awarded on merit, ie, know how not know who. We do not need road block on the highways, there is less or no crime on motorways. The police should be out there in the street safeguarding citizens not milking drivers. My dream Zimbabwe.

T he election was won through the under registration of millions of mdc supporters at the same time issuing millions of voter slips to all that attended Zanu pf meetings. The 2million won by Mugabe is the most he can get from the 6million potential voters

@Billcrest ZANU won in matabeleland because of what TSVANGIRAI did to the people of matabeleland. Show me one serious mdc official from matabeleland. Secondly, look at how ZANU has promoted Obed Mpofu and the work that he has done for Bubi.

Surprised, no perplexed by the utterances of the MDC-T that "this time the people's vote will be protected from stealing by Zanu PF when the MDC-T went into the elections even when itself: (i) did not have the Voters Roll and worse still, when its voters dd not know at which locations they were to cast their votes, (ii) despite that the elections or the election date was unconstitutional, the Party still participated in them, (iii) those on the Special Voters' Roll, who failed to vote on the 14th July 2013, were allowed to vote in the General Elections where their names did not appear, how could this be done without double voting since their names had been cancelled or erased from the Voters' Roll and finally, (iv) people were allowed to vote with only registration slips, again, the problem of double voting loomed. Given the above constitutional irregularities and the others in these elections, how was the vote protected by the Party? Furthermore, not taking the meaning of stealing literally, how was the MDC protecting the voter given that it acquiesced to the above abuses noted in the voters processes? Was the Party playing with the emotions of its voters? "Vakuru havanakunyepa pavakati munhu anodziya moto wembava, imbavawo zvakare". Well, this is the problem with the MDC-T in these rigged elections of 31st July 2013.

Where are the masses that have put zanupf into gvmnt . we want to see the jubilation that goes with it, why is it the country in a state of mourning rather than celebration this victory. what i'm saying is zanu pf rigged the election in one way or another, wait and see the results of being a crook will show as time goes on. Thank you the people of Botwana. We are at cross roads. MT is the only REAL man who has tried to stand up to RGM at a high price. ZANU PF men should all join the women's league - spineless cowards.

chipolopolo - 6 August 2013

MDC was part of Zim government since 2008. Its strange that they feel cheated by a system they were part of. If they could not manipulate or change the system to their favour since 2008 , it leaves an egg in MDC face. How can you be cheated by a system you were part of. Instead of trying to find fault in the 2013 elections , MDC must focus on 2018. One priority is to change leadership. Morgan has done his part , and its respected . He must pass the button to the next leader. 13 years on the helm , requires him to hand over power , unless he wants to become a shadow of Mugabe , who have stayed in power for so long.

It happens - 6 August 2013

most of these comenting MDC takes things for granted just like Tsvan-CRY took Zimbos for granted. A lot has changed and since Morgan agreed that there are sanctions we people changed our allegiance coz sanctions made us suffer. MDC crafted ZIDERA to force us turn against BOB haisi rigging iyoyo. MDC won the previous elections why didnt they audit the voters roll? For an election to be free and fair and credible it has to be MDC the victor? Aaah nonsense.

sandie-baby - 6 August 2013

What will be interesting to behold is the actual evidence presented to court, with those not wishing to be named and those senior officials saying they didn't see the voters roll but it was wrong. Far better to lose gracefully, after all, overseas funding for any local political party exempts the party from standing in the elections

infairness - 6 August 2013

The problem with MDC is that they focus on emotional abstract issues, such as rule of law, human rights etc whereas ZANU Pf focuses on practical needs of the people.

reason - 6 August 2013

We all know that taking ZANU PF to court over a manipulated electoral system, hence not so credible election results, will not yield any justice for the MDC-T. Yes, while exhausting all legal avenues is the way to go in exposing this undemocratic culture of ZEC, Zanu PF and the partisan justice system, the MDC must also take a critical audit of itself and draw some lessons from it . Boycotting government duty by those MP who won will sink the party into oblivion and irrelevance as theY would have let down those who voted for them. Stay in government, albeit as junior partner and probably a subject of ridicule. Work hard for your constituencies and strategize for the 2018 elections.
