Presiding officer smuggles ballot box

HARARE - A smuggled ballot box allegedly from nearby barracks has been found at the constituency command centre in Dzivarasekwa, the Daily News can report.

A Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) official confirmed to the Daily News that the presiding officer Rachel Machiya staggered into Dzivaresekwa Community Hall No 2 carrying a ballot box which contained presidential ballot papers.

It is alleged that Machiya single-handedly transported the ballot box during the crack of dawn around 3am. Machiya ran into an alert MDC election agent Jameson Zaranyika.

He confirmed that he witnessed Machiya suspiciously sneaking into the centre carrying the ballot box containing the presidential votes.

“Around 3am I woke up and went inside the hall, there I saw the presiding officer Rachel Machiya carrying a ballot box,” Zaranyika said.

“When I asked her what she was doing, she said she was trying to retrieve the V11 form and we also discovered that she had brought the ballot box from the army barracks where our polling agent had been locked outside.”

The Zec’s chief elections officer for Dzivaresekwa only identified as R Tapfumaneyi said she could not shed light into the scandal, saying the matter had been referred to higher offices.

“Yes we have heard about that but you can get that information from Remembrance,” said Tapfumaneyi.

When the Daily News visited Remembrance Drive in Mbare, the Zec district command centre chief elections officer Taurayi Gavi said they had received reports of the smuggled ballot.

At around 5 pm yesterday, results for the presidential elections were still not pasted outside the polling station at Dzivaresekwa Community Centre No 2, with officials from Zanu PF and the MDC camped at the site.

Under the country’s electoral laws, ballot boxes must be counted at polling stations and results immediately pasted outside soon after tallying.

SADC and AU here it is. What do u have to say? If u declare this election free and fair then u are demonstrating, in the extreme, the absence of leadership and integrity on the African continent. No wonder why non-Africans end up interfering in African affairs and in the process impose their interests on Africa. The AU, SADC and ECOWASS' lack of leadership has become the biggest agent of imperialism.

The calm with which ZANU PF conducted themselves this time was telling that they were cooking a better meal for the electorate, voters were 100 years and older in many many instances making Zimbabwe a country with the longest life expectancy except in reality most of us live up to only 40 years on average. The ballots were duplicated so stuffing boxes was easy because the voting was done way before the elections. ZEC was complicit in the whole deal making it temper proof. AU SADC came in expecting violence and so that it did not happen they only think it was a fair election. I say let ZANU PF form a government, let them run things the way they want to... Mugabe WILL not be there in the next election that we all know, so they have some soul searching to do... they will eat their own pretty soon and the economy will be their Achilles heel. I am sad, dejected and frustrated but am not about to to give them what they want... ZANU PF expect violence responses, I say lets organize peaceful marches and demonstrations to show our dissatisfaction... if not allowed by the ZANU PF police then we should completely leave them to run the country without our coopetration... by this I mean no MDC involvement in parliament or decision making... The international community is tired of Zimbabwe so Mugabe and his people are practical walking away with murder... the one thing they will never get away from is their conscience if they have one. Peace be upon us and may we forever be a blessed people whose dignity and humanity can never be defined by the actions of a selected few.

It was just too perfect... RGM saying he will step down if loses... since when has he ever said that in all his 33 years in power? Denouncing violence, because he did not want his plan to be marred by violence, honestly is there anyone in their right mind who believes that ZANU PF can win a landslide in zim to day with how much pain and suffering they have put our country through... this is the saddest time in zim ever, its worse than the colonial era because this misery has been visited upon us by our own... shame

Can anyone tell me how exactly these election were rigged country wide while MDC was watching? Why did yo election agents sign for something they did not agree with? Can u pliz come up with concrete evidence rather than speculating. MDC should stop relying on rumours, u should learn from Baba Jukwa' s lies. Even BBC predicted RG winning this election did u think the did not do their home work. If have doubts check their WEB site. Better luck next time. Stop thriving on making people poor so as to vote for u.

I was an MDC-T urgent at Ngwalongwalo primary school, what I saw was shocking. They were using a fake Chinese light to ditact voting ink but I saw some people who had already casted their votes repeating to cast votes just after very few hours. After counting the ballot papers, to our surprise we went on recounting the ballot papers until dawn. After the presiding urgent refused to announce the because Zanu was beaten.

SADC and Zuma silenced Ms Lindiwe Zulu in order to proclaim the Zimbabwean elections free and fair (credible). Where the elections (full of rigging and fraud), really free and fair - credible? It has been pointed out that even though SADC criticised Mugabe for his refusal to implement the GPA Reforms or throw spanners on them, SADC did not force him into implementing the GPA Reforms in order to guarantee it per its prior promise to signing the GPA document by all the signatories. SADC leaders are the same as Mugabe and it finally came out in the silencing of Lindiwe Zulu which enabled SADC and Zuma to declared the elections free and fair without any contradiction. Both of them could not do have done so with Zulu maintaining that the elections will not be credible unless the GPA Security Sector and Media Reforms were implemented first before the holding of the elections. Then a special question is posed to both organisations. A special question is posed to Ms N, Dhlamini-Zuma, how did you know or declare the elections on the 31st July 2013 to be free and fair before the voting was done, how is that possible?

Tapera Yemurai Choto - 3 August 2013

Fellow Zimbabweans, what is the really meaning of this broad, day-light robbery of the harmonised elections in 2031 by Mugabe for the fourth time? Does it confirm the view of how Mugabe and Zanu PF regards the status of the country - their property?

Tapera Yemurai Choto - 3 August 2013

Lets ask the police spokesperson how the law would be applied on this case!

Farce - 3 August 2013

ok lets say Mugabe is unable to run for presidency next time he appoints a successor mnangagwa what changes nothing it gets worse. vakaimba,' yakauya neropa inoenda neropa' and we didn't learn voting will never work in zim

MDC please accept defeat. Manufacturing these stories about rigging without any evidence does not get you anywhere. MDC won in its traditional strong holds of Bulawayo and Harare and ZANU-PF did in Mashona-land provinces. If ZANU PF rigs elections, why did they not do it in Bulawayo and Harare? It is clear that ZANU PF were better prepared this time and made significant inroads in Matebeleland provinces and Harare and swept the swing provinces of Masvingo and Manicaland owing to clear and tangible polices where schools and clinics were built from community share-ownership funds. ZANU PF this time avoided imposition of candidates and this worked in their favour also. MDC imposed 16 candidates in Manicaland among them Dr Simba Makoni in Makoni Central and Semwayo in Chipinge Central and both lost heavily. ZANU PF suffered the same fate in Bikita and Mudzi where Kereke and Samkange won as independence. If elections are rigged, how come independent candidates like Kereke and Samkange won in ZANU PF strongholds? Are you saying these independent candidates also rigged???. If little Samkange and Kereke can also rig and win, why cant a party like MDC who claim large followings also copy and win? The people have spoken and lets accept it. They have said: No to homosexuality, No to neo-colonialism, No to puppets of the West and No to bulls who abuse women. Viva ZANU PF.

Commander Guvamatongo - 3 August 2013

Hahahaha....... poor zimbos. yu think rigging comes in the form of stuffing of ballot boxes with ballot papers. talk of technology, that ballot paper is not jus an ordinary paper. yu can't beat the NIKUV mafias!!!!! zanu had the luxury of choosing which constituencies they wanted and which ones to gve the mdc-t. those ballot papers were different and the special ones would be sent to areas where zanu wanted to be victorious. tsvangirayi and crew shuld have insisted on taking part in the printing. yu think NIKUV was here on holiday. hw many polling stations were there? shame, mdc is not aware of this. there were so many of these unofficial polling stations where zanu pf youth masquarrading as zec, mdc agents wuld be employed to put an x on ballot papers coming up with results like zanu: 690 and mdc: 20.

yaa - 3 August 2013

MDC should refuse to take up office in the costituencies they won, let Zanu Pf take everything for themselves, ko handiti ndizvo zvavanoda!

wiseman of the east - 3 August 2013

I am prepared to die for an honest cause. I will singularly take up a gun and shoot some-one, a top politician who stole my dream of a free Zimbabwe. It is going to happen before end of August.
