Bring Zim to a standstill — Bennett

HARARE - A veteran Zimbabwean opposition leader called on Thursday for a campaign to bring the country to a halt, after a disputed election that has seen President Robert Mugabe’s allies claim victory.

“There needs to be resistance against this theft and the people of Zimbabwe need to speak out strongly,” the Movement for Democratic Change’s (MDC) Roy Bennett told AFP in Johannesburg.

“I’m talking about passive resistance. I’m talking about people completely shutting the country down — don’t pay any bills, don’t attend work, just bring the country to a standstill.”

Bennett, an aide to Mugabe’s long-time rival Morgan Tsvangirai, spends much of his time outside Zimbabwe after a series of arrests.

He remains MDC treasurer.

Mugabe’s allies declared the veteran leader had romped to victory in Wednesday’s poll.

Bennett expressed dismay at an election he described as an “absolute total sham”.

“I’m totally shocked at how badly they’ve rigged it and expect to get away with it.”

“It’s not a case of even rigging it. It’s a case of having totally stolen it.

“Blatant, outright, daylight theft of the greatest proportions.”

Britain, meanwhile, has expressed concern that Zimbabwe had not enacted important electoral reform before Wednesday’s vote in the former British colony, and by reports that large numbers of voters had been turned away.

“We are also concerned by the late publication of the electoral roll,” a spokesperson for the British Foreign Office told Reuters.

“Any judgement on the credibility of elections will need to take these factors into account.”

This chubby guy is saying these things while he is comfortable in sandton. Huya kuno kumusha uite lead this violence you are propagating. Elections where stolen yes but confrontation will not lead us anytwhere

zvikombo - 2 August 2013

Mad old white Selous scout, Come to Zim we will arrest you for treason for these utterances!!

Musiringofa - 2 August 2013

Bennett is spot on. He is not talking about any violent confrontation but is instead advocating for a smart revolution where no blood is shed. His suggestion needs some consideration by all progressive forces and may need some refinement here and there to make it effective. Forward ever, backwards never!

Chabwino - 2 August 2013

charles moyo - 2 August 2013

Bennet you enjoyed a lot whilst we were suffering in our motherland. You killed our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and our relatives during your smith regime govt now you want us Zimbabweans to destroy our country in the same way you did with your puppet tsvangirayi to destroy our country through stay aways. Why do you take us for a ride seeing us as people who dont think? Only those who believe that a pink person is superior to the blacks will follow your advice. You want people to destroy their country so that you gain mileage by saying Mugabe has failed? Your selous scout mentality is still dragging you, and you are not even ashamed of your utterances. This is a clear sign that you take us blacks as people who dont think. Down with you and all your relatives!!!

Bennet used a smoke screen of farming while he looted diamonds in Chimanimani. He hired some mecenaries to cause havoc but he was exposed before he could do anything. He worked for the Rhodesian army and has the blood of many zimbabweans including my relatives on his hands. It is one reason the MDC lost the election, they are ready to sell our birthright for a meal. Bennet at best should enjoy QUIETLY the diamond wealth of this country that he looted than to talk like an over fed racist. If it be sons of the soil who are dissatisfied we talk things out. Let not the people of zimbabwe be pushed into violence by people like bennet who want to sneak in amid the violence and loot more diamonds. NO TO VIOLENCE!

son of the soil - 2 August 2013

We are tired of this claim that elections were rigged, stolen etc. MDC was in govt for 4 years. The RG's office was under one of your co-ministers. Why did she not clean up the voters roll? Tsavingson was involved in choosing the ZEC commissioners and was the one who announced the Chairperson Makarau. Now he is blaming ZEC for losing the elections. From 2000, mdc having been claiming elections are rigged. If its so easy to rig elections why don't you copy from ZANU-PF and also rig. Hudofo hwakaita sei kutadza nekukopa kwese? Viva Zimbabwe and our revolutionary party. Zimbabwe will never be a colony again. Vana Bennett go and hang.

Commander Guvamatongo - 2 August 2013

This is typical example of a selfish whiteman who want to destroy our beautiful country in the same biblical fashion of two women fighting for one surviving baby, can a reasonable person listen to Bennet's ideas shuwa shuwa? maybe his former Teaboy M(ale)organ.

TSVANGIRAI - 2 August 2013

You call yourself "Tsvangirai", why dont you pick on another name hezvo you think lowly of people who have put their lives on the line to free their country? What "our country" are you talking about? You dont have a country any more, fool! Dai pasina american dollar, dai iripi nyika. The zim dollar is now worthless, its worth nothing. Guess who caused it? If our forfathers thought like you, we would still be under oppession by ma Rhodesians. Nothing is for mahala. Ramba wakadaro .... and nothing will change, unless if you are telling me that you are one of the people benefiting from Zanu PF

Wekanye - 3 August 2013

So says a man who is living in luxury ku SA, mavheti akaoma akomana. Look Mr Bennet, just because you lived in Zim for years and years and just because you speak shona doesn't make you a Zimbabwean, i speak english and have lived in the UK for years as well,.,.it didn't make me a British. I am sure your pain is for thousands of zimbabweans who will benefit from indigenisation and land reform,.,.because instead of you its them,.,. Its amazing how people talk about atrocities dze ku Matebeleland and nothing about chimoio and nyadzonya nxaaa

Blacklaogy - 3 August 2013

Blacklaogy, only a few hundreds of people were killed at Chimoio and Nyadzonya AND THAT WAS A WAR. In Matebeleland 20000 ordinary villagers were killed when the country was NOT AT WAR.
