Court orders Zec to release voters' roll

HARARE - High Court judge Joseph Mafusire has ordered the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to furnish Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC party with a hard copy of the voters’ roll by 12pm today.

MDC secretary general Tendai Biti had filed an urgent court application demanding an electronic voters’ roll in line with the Electoral Act.

Biti cited Zec and Registrar of Voters Tobaiwa Mudede as respondents. He said despite numerous and persistent demands, they had been denied access to the voters’ roll.

In the application, filed by MDC lawyers Tonderai Bhatasara and Tawanda Zhuwarara, Biti said his party’s access to the voters’ roll was critical and indispensable for it to be able to verify the outcome of the elections.

“Without access to the voters’ roll there is no way a credible election can be conducted,” Biti said.

However, Zec told the court that its system had developed a technical fault, which rendered it unable to provide the MDC with an electronic voters’ roll.

Bhatasara yesterday told the Daily News that Zec was to provide with an electronic voters’ roll to MDC once its system was fixed.

I have never thought people of zimbabwe are now intelligent.Let me say this my party was attempting to sway peoples' voices, but with the situation on the ground, tarohwa ne MDC.Rita Makarau before she joined the bench, she was a member of CIO and she is still hence the reason why she is giving flimsy excuse.Joyce Kazembe,Welshman Ncube and Auther Mutambara are all members of cio. Save chitongai henyu. Vasati vavhota, chivhoterai President elect,Tsvangirai

Makarau is part and parcel of the electoral fraud hence the delay

Take heart Zimbabweans. If this had been any other country, we would have dissloved in Syria-type violence the way the RG, ZEC etc take voters for granted.

Zvinoshamisa zvinoitwa ne ZEC. The voters roll is the panacea to a free, fair, transparent & democratic election and the failure by ZEC to furnish contesting parties within reasonable time makes the playing field uneven. Please note that Zimbabwe is larger than all of us and these semantics will not get us anywhere.

A hard copy of the voters' roll was printed out of an electronic copy, You have to have the electronic copy first before you can have the hard copy. ZEC is just whistling Dixie. Something smells here.

IF AU & SADC declare these erections fair l will want to know the following (1) How do people vote without veryfing their names on the voters roll (2)Political parties DO NOT HAVE THE VOTERS ROLL on the day of voting (3)The very ZEC has a dead printer and no technician in place to fix the problem fast (4)This story that we heard from BABA JUKWA that the paper and pens supplied by the NIKUV organisation rubs off after a few hours ,this needs to be investigated if it is true what is the way forward .(5)The chief election officer for MDC T is in jail as we speak so what is the opinion of the AU &SADC ,l hope the right decision is going to be taken on these issues noted above

"Zec told the court that its system had developed a technical fault, which rendered it unable to provide the MDC with an electronic voters' roll", ZEC said. The machine developed a fault when the roll was required by MDC????? What a coincident! These are the people who in the past have been facilitating ZANU PF's rigging tactics. Mabatwa....

Kauchy - 31 July 2013

How come ZANU PF has not asked for the voter's roll? Are they so dumb that they contest in an election without a care about who is on the roll? So who is cheating? I rest my case.

Rita Makarau, you are the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), a supposedly, independent organisation; did it have to take a Court Order in order for ZEC to release the Voters Roll being used by each constituency? Is this part of the fraud and rigging strategy? Furthermore, Zimbabweans know that you are a Zanu, card, carrying member and that you were appointed a judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe by none other than Robert Mugabe. Is this part of your pay back (thank you), method?

Tapera Yemurai Choto - 1 August 2013

Latest reports show that MDC are the ones who are more prone to rigging. They saw it coming and having been singing the song to justify rejecting the emphatic win by Zanu-PF.Hard copies are good enough. Why cry for electronic copies which can easily be manipulated. It is on record of how they wanted to go about this.As long as all election agents are given thats good enough.
