A defining moment

HARARE - Today is a defining moment for every Zimbabwean of whatever colour, creed, size, shape or age.

As voters stand in long and tortuous queues, Zimbabwe’s destiny lies in how they mark the ballot paper that makes a final verdict about the type of government to expect.

Your choice today determines how every Zimbabwean will be governed for the next five years as you elect councillors, legislators and a president.

You are charged with defining the political frame of mind under which the student, the worker or the company executive will hope to achieve his aspirations.

Just as much, you determine what level of prosperity you desire for your children and elders.

This is a mammoth task placed in your hands. It is essential not to waste the life-changing opportunity to a better future.

Let not the future of generations who come of age bounce off your conscience by squandering a glorious chance for your voice to be heard until another poll in half a decade to come.

Let not the judgment you make agonise the nation for the rest of the period.

Every Zimbabwean voter should place on himself or herself the burden of proving that we mean well for our nation.

That is what we have always been. Zimbabwe is in the cross-hairs of the international community which is holding its breath out of concern that our democratic practices ought not come off the seams.

Let us not give them opportunity to censure us, but praise that we have finally defrayed our democratic deficit.

We do not deserve the pariah status that has long hobbled national progress.

Today is a defining moment too for regional bodies such as the AU and Sadc.

They have observers entrusted with making sure our plebiscite does not come off the rails or stray off course.

Let not officials under the continental and regional bodies allow the organisations’ reputations be dragged through the cesspit of debilitating anxiety.

The bodies’ reputations are at stake.

Let it be known to all and sundry that the world is watching and their presence not found wanting.

Let every Zimbabwean’s vote give the joy of involvement in unleashing the human potential in yourself and others to leave a legacy generations will cherish.

Let every patriotic Zimbabwean know that he is participating in an exercise that seeks to restore dignity to everyone and give the nation a deserved place in the community of nations.

More significantly, let your actions today serve to propel Zimbabwe to heights it has dreamt of attaining.

None, but ourselves can reclaim the self-esteem we so much deserve by casting the ballot that will ensure everyone realises their dream without hindrance.

Zimbabweans today surrender their indestructible spirit and resilience in difficult circumstances to the ballot.
