Chisipite lifts Golden Girls title

HARARE – Chisipite Senior School rose above last year’s runners-up heartache to depose defending champions Peterhouse with a 1-0 win after extra-time in the final of the Golden Girls hockey trophy at Arundel School on Sunday.

It was clash of school hockey giants who have taken turns in dominating the tournament since its inception in 1981.

And their rivalry lived up to expectations after the two heavyweights surged into the final after impressive performances in the preliminary stages.

It was however, the Sinead Cockroft-coached-Chisipite team who had the extra steam and dominated the exchanges for much of regulation time with Peterhouse pinned deep into their own half.

Chisipite’s Chelsea Dollar finally broke the deadlock with the sudden death goal in extra-time to send the Harare-based school into a frenzy.

It was eighth time Chisipite inscribed their name on the prestigious tournament meant to commemorate the Zimbabwe hockey’s glory days following their victories in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2011.

Girls College finished third while hosts Arundel finished fourth. Convent was in fifth place ahead of Kyle who came sixth.
