Bulawayo Chiefs bag Machache trophy

BULAWAYO – Bulawayo Chiefs are the champions of the inaugural Machache Meats Tournament after their 1-0 victory over Mpumalanga in a closely fought final at Luveve Stadium on Sunday.

Former Quelaton striker Tedius Mugumanya scored the all important goal for the Rahman Gumbo-coached Chiefs on the hour mark after getting on to the end of a long throw in by Wiberforce Chiramba.

Gumbo said the cup victory will provide motivation for his charges who are gunning for the solitary promotion ticket in the Southern Region Division One.

“It was a difficult game if you look at the number of chances that we created and missed, but I do not blame my boys since we were coming from a defeat in the league.”

Gumbo said: “The win was a motivator for them as we still have a long way to go in the league and I believe that our chances for promotion are still bright as long as we remain focused.”

Chiefs won $3 000, a trophy and winners medals while Mpumalanga walked away with $1 800.

Mpumalanga were left aggrieved though after the match referee ignored a handling incident involving Chiefs captain Lindelani ‘Vice’ Ncube on 67 minutes and their assistant coach Mthenjwa Moyo was left fuming after the match.

“It was a clear penalty and things could have turned out differently if we had been awarded a spot kick,” Moyo said.

“We are not happy with the officiating although we also gifted them with their goal but otherwise we had a good game.”

In the third place playoff Black Boots beat Hwange Juniors 2-0 through goals by Cephas Chinjekure and Leeroy Ndlovu.
