Cop fired for driving MDC MP's car

MASVINGO - A police officer in Chiredzi has been fired for driving an MDC legislator’s car.

Constable Brighton Mangoto, force number 056747 yesterday was found guilty by a police internal disciplinary board after he drove Chiredzi Central MDC MP, Moses Mare’s car into the police camp  in May.

Mangoto claims he wanted to buy the car and was doing a test drive before he could pay.

Martin Mureri of Matutu Kwirira and Partners, who represented Mangoto in the hearing, confirmed the dismissal.

“My client Constable Mangoto has lost his job,” Mureri said.

“He was fired over the phone by his superiors from the PGHQ human resources department for having links with MDC because he drove a car he intended to buy from the lawmaker.

According to the police charge sheet, it is alleged that on May 5 this year in Chiredzi town, Mangoto  drove an unregistered red Mazda MPV station wagon  into the police camp via a police-manned boom gate.

MDC MP Mare was said to be on the passenger seat. The charge further says Mongoto drove to the canteen and parked the car before returning it to the owner.

The charges also pointed out that his behaviour violated the Police Act Chapter 11:10 which  says “Acting in an unbecoming or disorderly manner or any manner prejudicial to good order or discipline reasonably likely to discredit the police force.”

Mureri said  his client had been victimised.
