Zanu PF plot to rig elections exposed

HARARE - There are new sensational claims that Zanu PF has come up with a deadly plot to rig next week’s elections, in a desperate bid to keep President Robert Mugabe in power.

The claims by UK newspaper, the Daily Mail, come as shocking discrepancies in figures of people who voted in the special voting exercise have been unearthed, raising fears of a flawed poll, and putting the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (Zec’s) competence to handle the July 31 poll under the spotlight.

Yesterday, political parties, observers and Zec officials spent the better part of the day haggling over the number of people who voted, as figures failed to tally with the physical count of returned ballot papers.

Zec conceded yesterday that the special voting process, which saw thousands of members of the security forces failing to vote, faced some challenges.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said he was concerned that Zec was planning to print eight million ballot papers when the number of registered voters was six million.

But it is the shocking details released by the Daily Mail which will surely put pressure on the credibility of Zec and Mugabe’s government to run free and fair polls at a time Sadc has also raised worries about Zimbabwe’s preparedness for next week’s polls.

The top British newspaper is in possession of confidential documents that expose plans to rig the forthcoming election.

The newspaper claims Zanu PF is plotting to steal millions of votes through massive and systematic ballot-rigging, combined with widespread intimidation by the party’s youths.

Zanu PF’s tactics, along with details of massive funding from named British, Chinese and African backers, are disclosed in highly confidential papers, the newspaper says.

The Daily Mail claims that the Chinese government, some African dictators and secretive diamond mining firms are aiding the Zanu PF rigging machine.

It says controversial Israeli firm, Nikuv International Projects, has been contracted and is in the process of manipulating Zimbabwe’s elections.

The Daily Mail alleges that the Israeli company was paid $13 million to rig the elections.

Detailing the claims, the Daily Mail says in part:

*Nikuv International Projects, an Israeli firm, is being paid.
