Tsvangirai blocked from handing over classroom block

HARARE – Senior officials in the Education ministry have allegedly blocked Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai from officially opening a classroom block donated to Hatcliffe High School by Harare North MP Theresa Makone.

Makone told the Daily News soon after delivering 90 desks and 90 chairs for the school on Monday that the MDC leader was blocked by bureaucrats fearing that the premier would gain political mileage as the July 31 election campaign gathers pace.

“Education ministry officials who are jealous about my work because of their Zanu PF mentality told us that the prime minister could not officiate at the handover ceremony allegedly because the head of the school did not follow protocol when the invite was made,” Makone said.

“They said we were supposed to have invited him eight weeks in advance yet the premier had no problems coming here.

“I take it that they are jealous about what I and my party have done because there has not been an A’ level class here until I chipped in as the MP having realised that there was real need.

“Where were they all along?”

Makone says the project cost her over $80 000 including the furniture and used resources from private donors and the Constituency Development Fund.

She took great exception to statements made by deputy Education minister Lazarus Dokora in the State media that it was a government project.

Well done amaiguru for looking after the welfare of the marginalised. Your charitable work will be recognised by the community of Hatcliffe & it is my earnest hope that they vote for u in the upcoming elections. I was privileged to work under your Husband, Mr Ian Muteto Makone at the Grain Marketing Board where your young sister worked as my Secretary. I must admit I learnt a lot from Ian and am quite confident that the PM has an able Aide in him. I hope and pray that u both win in the coming elections. May the good LORD bless u exceedingly.

If this is true, then these government officers embarrassed themselves no end..Tsvangirai is the PM of the land and where do functionaries in the ministries get the authority to do this? I think some civil servants are getting dangerously (to themselves) carried away. This has nothing to do with ZANU (dont think they would be this stupid) but overzealousness on the part of a few misguided officers who have no business being at the ministry..Puh!

In 1980 you voted for Gukurahundi Mugabe. You shouted and danced for him. You were in his youth movement. You both speak the same language. Kanti manje, why is he fighting you now?
