Rapists must spare children: Mugabe

HARARE – President Robert Mugabe has raised alarm at the escalating number of children being raped.

Addressing Zanu PF supporters at Nzvimbo Secondary School in Mashonaland Central last week, Mugabe said the situation was a matter of grave concern, adding children’s safety was under threat.

“The issue of raping minors, raping of children and girls is too much,” he said.

“Each and everyday something bad is happening. Every week (police commissioner-general Augustine) Chihuri gives us reports of rape cases.

“Let us leave these bad habits which are not part of our culture,” he said to his supporters.

“We have criminals amongst us, they might be Zimbabweans but we need to pay attention to their behaviour.”

Mugabe spoke as police also raised a red flag over the abuse of minors, with  statistics suggesting that at least a child is raped on a daily basis.

Over 2 400 children were raped while 3 421 cases of sexual abuse were reported to the police between January and October last year, according to Isabella Sergio, officer commanding police victim friendly unit.

Sergio told a national crime awareness campaign that rape of juveniles was on the increase.

“Rapists seem to take advantage of children’s naivety, vulnerability and their inability to protect themselves,” said Sergio.

According to law enforcement agents, 649 reported rape cases were perpetrated by relatives of vulnerable minors whom they would have put their trust in.

In Harare alone, a total of 824 women and girls were raped last year alone, up from 801 recorded in 2011, according to Clemence Munoriarwa, officer commanding Harare.

Mugabe said even if people differ on political, cultural and religious backgrounds, matters of children’s rights should be promoted by every Zimbabwean.

“On this issue we converge as Zimbabweans without looking at our backgrounds,” Mugabe said.

“We must restrain their bad behaviour so that they are made holy. The issue of murdering each other is very bad.

“People are being killed because of beer, some are saying “you did not buy me beer therefore I will kill you’, it is not good.”

But the n after this for political gain Mugabe goes to Marange and praises the apostolic sect that we all know are marrying off children as young as nine. He fails to take the chance to chide them for failing to provide their children with access to medication and the girl children with education. He is not a leader and if ever he was he is well past his sell-by date

Don't talk about it, do something about it Mr. President. Don't use this malaise that is affecting our youngsters as a campaign platform.
