Machache tourney enters last 8

BULAWAYO - The Southern Region Division One League takes a breather this weekend to make way for the Machache Meats Tournament which is now in the quarterfinal stage.

Former Premiership side Quelaton will play police outfit Black Boots on Saturday at Luveve Stadium in the only encounter that will be played in Bulawayo.

Quelaton booked their place in the quarters after accounting for New West 1-0 in the previous round courtesy of a Toto Banda strike.

Banda is the son of former Highlanders and Eagles star Tanny and looks set to be an even better player than his father as he is not only skilful but is also blessed with lightning speed.

ZPC Hwange will be out to salvage something from a season that has gone downhill after a promising start when they host Bulawayo Chiefs in Hwange Saturday afternoon.

The power generators were part of the leading pack on the log table in the first quarter of the season but have since hit a bad patch and are now languishing in the bottom half of the table.

To book their places in the quarters, Chiefs beat Zimbabwe Saints 2-0 while ZPC needed a penalty shootout to get past Mkhosana on a 5-4 scoreline.

Hwange Under-20, who beat Rufaro Rovers 2-1 in the previous round, will host Bulawayo Jumbos who were 2-0 winners over Bantu Rovers.

And in the final match of the last eight, Mpumalanga will play against Tsholotsho in Hwange.

Mpumalanga beat Technosphere 3-2 in the previous round while Tsholotsho beat Ntabazinduna 5-4 after a penalty shootout.

All matches will be played Saturday afternoon. The winners of the tournament will get $3 000.
