Uncle rapes niece, 3, for riches

BULAWAYO - A 63-year-old Bulawayo man serving 10 years in jail for raping his 3-year-old niece was on Monday denied bail pending appeal when he appeared before a regional magistrate.

Magistrate Mark Dzira threw out the bail application fearing Norman Weale could flee the country.

Prosecutor Goodluck Katenaire told the court that sometime in June last year, Weale sought the services of a medicine man to help him become wealthy.

The n’anga instructed him to have sex with a juvenile for the prescription to work.

That month the toddler’s parents divorced forcing her mother to stay with Weale at his home.

Pursuing the witchdoctor’s instructions, Weale invited his grandchildren to his house and he went to collect the girl accompanied by his friend, James Joseph.

Weale asked Joseph for permission to rape the toddler in his car but he remonstrated and told him to do it elsewhere.

The 63-year-old later raped his niece in his house.

After raping the girl, Weale met Joseph at a kiosk and bribed him with groceries to silence him.

But Joseph later revealed the incident to the girl’s mother which led to Weale being arrested in August last year.

The girl was taken to the doctor for medical examination and the doctor confirmed the rape.
