Bogus doctor arrested

BULAWAYO - A bogus nurse has been arraigned before the courts after he was caught carrying out an illegal abortion.

Praiser Gilliam Dube, 38, yesterday appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushowe facing charges of contravening Section 121(1) (a) of the Health Professionals Act Chapter 27:19.

He is being charged with practising as a medical practitioner while not registered as defined in the Act.

Dube, of 21426 Pumula South who is self-employed as a supplier of surgical sundries pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded out of custody to July 16 on $100 bail.

Prosecutor Shepherd Nhamburo told the court that on July 4 detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics section received information that Dube was masquerading as a doctor carrying out abortions at a local surgery.

The court heard that Dube was then contacted by a police informer who arranged to have an abortion.

Dube arranged to meet the informer at a local supermarket in the city centre where he reportedly demanded $200 to buy medication for the abortion process.

He indicated that the balance was to be paid after the abortion process had been performed, the court heard.

It is alleged Dube left to buy the said pills then allegedly asked the informer to accompany him to the surgery along Main Street.

She was taken to a room where the abortion was to be conducted.

During the initial process detectives stormed the room and arrested Dube.

They allegedly recovered 4x200 mcg misoprostol tablets and 2 boxes containing 10 vials x 1 000mg ceftriaxone powder for injections each and 20x5ml plasti-esteril solution.

The court further heard that when Dube was asked by the detectives to produce his practising certificate and medical doctor qualifications he confessed that he was not qualified but had knowledge of drug administration that he acquired when he once trained as a nurse at Binga Hospital.
