8 chosen for Fashion Weekend

HARARE - Catherine Ruze Modelling Agency has selected eight designers who will take part in the two-day Fashion Weekend which begins on October 12.

The annual event, which merges fashion, music and food into one programme, has chosen Nyasha Nhutsve, Samantha Dika, Samantha Matemadombo, Takudzwa Chikumbirike, Theresa Kagoro, Tanya Neferetari, Thelma Chindabata and Yvonne Feresu.

Shamiso Catherine Ruzvidzo, the modelling agency’s owner, who relocated from Australia last year, hopes to use her event as a catalyst for development in Zimbabwe’s fashion industry.

“You know there is always this perception that people do not like local products, that they prefer foreign things,” Ruzvidzo told the Daily News.

“This in fact is not true because so many people are looking for local designers but do not know where to find them or their products.

“This is where we are coming in as the agency, to help the designers market their things as well as giving them some capital to start designs they can sell,” she added.

Ruzvidzo has roped in several top Zimbabwean clothing retailers.

“We will be working with clothing shops such as Edgars, Truworths so that the designs can be available in their shops.

“We are creating a future for these designers so that five years down the line they can easily sustain themselves and hopefully help other upcoming designers. It will be an annual thing and we hope to produce many designers through this programme,” she said.

Catherine Ruze Modelling Agency has made its presence felt on the local scene since inception last year.

“25 of our models participated in this year’s Harare International Festival of Arts (Hifa). We were involved in running the fashion programme.

“Our models also took part in the Elite Model Look competition and the Zimbabwe Fashion Week which are very good for the girls’ careers.

“On the regional and international platform we are trying but it is a bit difficult as it is expensive for models to live outside. Despite these difficulties one of our models was spotted by one of the biggest agencies in South Africa, G3 Modelling Agency based in Johannesburg,” she said.
