Schools to close early

HARARE - David Coltart says Zimbabwe’s second term will now close one week earlier to pave way for preparations for elections which will be held on July 31, this year.

Schools will now close on July 26 instead of August 4, 2013.

“This is necessary to enable the participation of teachers in this national exercise as well as the use of schools as polling stations,” Coltart said in a statement posted on his website yesterday.

The minister said in order to compensate for lost time, third term will now commence on September 3, 2013 instead of September 10, 2013 but the closing date remains the same.

He also said special applications by schools for important events that cannot be cancelled or rescheduled will be accepted.

“Sympathetic consideration will be given to these applications so long as they do not clash with the election itself and do not involve keeping the entire school open,” said Coltart.
