Mbare cab thief jailed

HARARE - A Mbare man who stole a taxi was jailed for six years by a Harare regional magistrate.

Gibson Jacket, 39, was slapped with an eight- year prison term by regional magistrate Sandra Mupindu but two years were set aside on condition of good behaviour.

Tendai Jambo, 43, of Mbare had been hired by Jacket to take him to Waverley Blankets in Graniteside.

The court heard that on May 10, Jambo was driving his Toyota Raum along Ardbennie Road near Mwamuka Service Station in Mbare, when he was stopped by Jacket.

Jacket then asked to be driven to Waverley Blankets in Graniteside but he could only afford to pay $2.

Jambo agreed but told Jacket that he would first go home to take a bath before proceeding with the journey.

The court heard that when they arrived at Jambo’s house,  Jacket was left in the car with the keys still on the ignition.

Jacket later followed Jambo into the yard and sat outside the house while the taxi driver bathed.

Whilst Jambo was in the house, Jacket jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off, with Jambo shouting for help from his neighbours to stop the car.

On May 25, Jacket was arrested by police while driving the car in the company of his friends.
