Econet appoints top international banker

HARARE - Econent Wireless Zimbabwe has announced the appointment of top international investment banker Martin Edge as a non-executive director.

Edge, who has worked in Africa for nearly 20 years with some of the world’s largest banks including HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank, is the third high profile new ?independent director to join the board of Zimbabwe’s largest telecommunications provider in the last two months.

This follows the appointment of the company’s new chairperson, veteran American telecoms executive, James Myers, who has promised to refresh the board by bringing in more outside directors.

Edge, who has lived in South Africa since 1995, was educated at Oxford University and has worked as an investment banker throughout most of his career.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to persuade Martin Edge to join our board. He is a vastly experienced director who knows the African telecoms space backwards. I believe his inclusion will greatly strengthen the board,” Myers said in a statement

Other directors of the company are Strive Masiyiwa, Tracy Mpofu, Craig Fitzgerald, Beatrice Mtetwa, Godfrey Gomwe, Sherree Shereni, Douglas Mboweni and Kris Chirairo.
