Churchill, Mbare High reach Copa Coca Cola finals

HARARE - Churchill Boys High are on course to win the 16 and Under Copa Coca Cola finals for an unprecedented fifth time after they beat Lord Malvern 5-4 on penalties here yesterday.

That victory earned the Eastlea-based school the right to represent Harare province at the Copa Coca Cola finals that have been set for the Eastern border town of Mutare in between July 12 and 13.

En route to the final Churchill previous tournament winners in 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2008 beat Mabvuku High School 1-0, Mufakose High Two 1-0 and Zengeza High Four 1-0. 

Lord Malvern’s road to the final saw them beat Mabvuku High 1-0, drawing 0-0 against Prince Edward School and Dzivarasekwa High Two 5-3 on penalties.

In the girls Under-17 Copa Coca Cola provincial finals category, Mbare High School won the right to be Harare province’s flag bearers after they beat Highfield High Two, 2-0 in the final.

Elsewhere in games played across the other 10 provinces of Zimbabwe on Friday, Masvingo province witnessed a shocker as favourites and 2007 champions Pamushana High School went down to Mwenezi 7-6 in a tightly contested penalty shoot-out in the final.

Chidyamakono will represent the province in the girls’ category.

Rukweza High School will represent Manicaland province in the girls’ category whilst Gaza High School will carry the hopes of the province in the boys section.

Howard High School will be Mashonaland Central representatives after a fine run that saw them beating Muzarabani, Chipadze, Katakura and Centeneray High School.

St Francis High School will represent Mashonaland Central in the girls section.

Matabeleland South will be represented by provincial winners Gwanda as well as defending champions Mzingwane High School.

Hwange High School and Mosi-O-Tunya will represent Matabeleland North in the boys and girls’ section respectively.

Mashonaland East will be represented by provincial winners in the boys category Chemanza High School and winners in the girls’ section Rutanhira High School.

Mpopoma and Masocha will carry the hopes of Bulawayo province in the boys and girls’ category respectively.

Matinunure High School who scored ten goals en route to being crowned Midlands champions will be joined by their male counterparts Zvishavane High School as Midlands representatives.

Sodbury and Ngezi Barracks will represent Mashonaland West in the girls and boys section respectively.
