Bruised Mutodi gets consolation from music

HARARE - After failing to make it in the Zanu PF primary elections, flamboyant businessman-cum-musician Energy Mutodi begrudgingly surrendered Goromonzi South Constituency to Beatrice Nyamupinga while drowning his sorrows in showbiz.

Mutodi wrote on his Facebook page that he will no longer stop music as earlier indicated since his political ambitions have hit a brickwall.

“After failing to make it into the Zanu PF primaries, I wish to announce here that all my efforts are now being redirected toward supporting the winning candidate Cde Beatrice Nyamupinga,” Mutodi said.

“I would have wanted to take Goromonzi Constituency in a direction which I thought was right and progressive but as a member of the party, I have a delegated responsibility to respect and uphold its decisions.

“I will not stand as an independent candidate. I remain a committed comrade geared to propel the party to win in the harmonised elections. However, I need to pay tribute to all those who supported my candidature as MP throughout the way. Our time will come. Let’s wait for 2018.”

He said there was a silver lining to the dark cloud.

“To my music fans, I think we have been given another five years to release more albums and perform more live shows,” the Chigorodanda singer said.

“We will be rolling out our live shows as usual with the help of Shiga Shiga, Mutodi Express band manager.”

Just before the former ruling party’s shambolic primary elections, Mutodi had predicted a landslide victory and told the Daily News that his days in the music were numbered.

“I am optimistic that I am the next Member of Parliament for Goromonzi South Constituency, therefore, it will be noble for me to quit my musical career such that I will concentrate on executing government duties,” said Mutodi then.

Tatu Muluba as he is affectionately known by his fans had planned to hand the reins to his young brother Elasto as the band leader.

“For the sake of my fans I will appoint my young brother Elasto to take the Mutodi Express forward and I do not doubt his musical capabilities as he is an equally talented artiste just like me,” Mutodi told the Daily News then.

The former Geography teacher has three sungura albums under his belt and these are Sekawo Mbichana, Magetsi Ngaabake and the latest Kuita Kuri Kwenyu, an album inspired by the nasty relationship he had with his former wife Tariro Chirende.
