Mudede refuses to give MPs voter reg figures

LEGISLATORS have been denied figures by the Registrar General of people who were registered in the ongoing voter registration programme.

The parliamentary portfolio committee on Defence and Home Affairs chaired by Paul Madzore last week embarked on an outreach programme, to ascertain how the registration was going, but faced resistance from the provincial registrar officers who refused to divulge the figures of newly-registered voters.

Jabulani Mbambo, provincial registrar for Matabeland South at Gwanda registration office told Madzore and his committee that he had received instructions from his boss Tobaiwa Mudede not to divulge the numbers of people who had been registered.

“I cannot give you the statistics of people who have been registered or turned away since we started the programme.  We are under instructions from Registrar General and I cannot release the figures,” said Mbambo.

Madzore insisted that his committee had oversight role in monitoring the ongoing exercise, but Mbambo refused to give in saying he needed clearance from Mudede.

“We are Members of Parliament, we are doing our oversight job and Mudede cleared us to have a meeting with you so that you can give an update on the figures,” said Madzore, but the official declined to give figures.

The Register General office is undertaking   a fresh 30-day mobile voter registration as provided by the new Constitution which started on June 10 and ends on July 9.

At the registration centres, there were long queues of people seeking to be registered but the process was blighted by lack of resources like generators, cameras and ink.

The centres had computers with updated voters’ roll that enabled people to check their names on the roll.

There was a high turnout of “aliens” in the farming areas.

Dates for elections are yet to be announced as President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai fail to agree on the timing for the critical exercise despite the Constitutional Court ruling that the elections are to be held by 31 July.
