The return of Kumbula

HARARE - Patrick Kumbula has not enjoyed the best of form for Dynamos thus far this season, but on Sunday, in the 3-0 demolition of How Mine, the former Hippo Valley forward turned on the style and exhibited his genius.

Kumbula was the star of the show for the Glamour Boys after he scored a brace that propelled the defending champions to within one point of joint log leaders Highlanders and Chicken Inn.

Upon re-joining the defending champions from a loan spell at division one side Hippo Valley, the former Under-23 forward faced a daunting task of filling the huge void left by strikers Roderick Mutuma and Simba Sithole, who crossed the Limpopo to join Absa Premiership teams.

And that DeMbare was knocked out of the Champions League in the early stages of the tournament, coupled by their stuttering at the beginning of the current campaign, did not help matters.

Until Sunday’s match, Kumbula had only found the target twice in the Premiership against Shabanie Mine and Black Rhinos but he chose the occasion to silence his critics with an outstanding performance.

It was also an opportunity for the record Zimbabwean champions to bounce back following their first defeat of the season, to Buffaloes in the midweek.

It was indeed a strong response from the Glamour Boys and with a bit of lucky and precision, Kumbula could have scored three or more goals but in the end he was satisfied with his contribution.

On his first goal Kumbula said: "I saw the ball coming in the box and I tried to get in a good position when Ocean crossed it.

“I think it was one of my best goals considering how I controlled the ball. We won a difficult match and it was not easy to fight back after our defeat last week.”

Kumbula, however, played down his brace, saying he is only doing his job.

“What we want is titles and we’re on the right path. My goals are only important if they help the team.”

Kumbula, whose season has also been hampered by a series of injuries, believes he has what it takes to finish among the top goal scorers in the league.

“I was slowed by injuries recently but I am working hard to regain my full fitness.” - Godknows Matarutse
