Top seeds fall at Select Healthcare tourney

HARARE - Thrills and upsets characterised the second day of the Select Healthcare Junior Tennis Championships that began Friday across three venues.

A number of the leading top junior players failed to reach the finals of the tourney that will take place at the Harare Sports Club Sunday.

As the battle for supreme unfolded yesterday, Under-12 girls’ top seed Natalia Antkowiak and Under-14 girls favourite Kundai Manyonga crashed out of the tournament succumbing to lowly ranked opponents.

Antkowiak lost 6-3, 6-4 to Nandi Munyulwa while Yasman Mama overpowered Manyonga 6-0, 6-1.

The last top seed standing was Under-16 girls’ favourite Rufaro Chirewa, who sailed through to the final after dismissing Rumbidzai Makamure 6-1, 6-0.

Tournament administrator and logistical administrator Terry Mubwandarikwa was upbeat that tennis enthusiasts will be treated to explosive finale today.

“The first two days have demonstrated the potential that lies in these kids that in any case will blossom in the final,” Mubwandarikwa told the Daily News on Sunday.

“We are confident that we will have a mouth-watering end to the tournament and believe that we are on the right track as we endeavour to unearth gems through tournaments of this magnitude.”
