Rahman to take over at Chiefs

BULAWAYO - Former Zimbabwe national football team Rahman Gumbo is poised to take over as head coach of Southern Region Division One log leaders Bulawayo Chiefs in a move that will see current gaffer Thulani Sibanda being reassigned to the juniors.

Gumbo occupies the post of technical director at the ambitious side, which has emerged as the favourites to secure promotion to the Castle Premiership.

Chiefs owner Lovemore Sibanda confirmed to the Daily News that changes to the coaching department have been mooted, but said a decision is yet to be made.

“It is an issue that we have discussed but no final decision has been taken,” Sibanda said. “So as things stand, the status quo still prevails and Rahman is still our technical director while Thulani is the head coach.”

Gumbo is a league championship winner in three countries, having won it twice in Zimbabwe before going on to lift it in Malawi and Botswana.

Chiefs currently lead the 16-team log by six points after collecting 28 points from 11 outings.

This Saturday, they host floundering New West in Plumtree and Sibanda predicted that his boys would bounce back to winning ways after last weekend’s goalless stalemate against Ntabazinduna.

New West assistant coach Clement Chimimba however, promised Chiefs a tough fight for the three points.

“We have a lot of respect for Chiefs because they are playing well but they will not have it easy on Saturday,” Chimimba said.

“We are not going to roll over and play dead but will give as much as we will be getting.”

New West were one of the pre-season favourites for the sole promotion ticket to the top-flight but have suffered from inconsistency and currently lie in tenth position with 14 points from 11 matches.
