Chilumba quits FC Platinum

ZVISHAVANE - FC Platinum were thrown into deeper turmoil Wednesday after coach Tenant Chilumba quit the club mid-season and returned to his native Zambia.

The former Hwange coach is now set to be unveiled as coach of Zambian top-flight side Power Dynamos after the club interviewed him last week for the vacant post.

His departure from Platinum marks a premature end to a short-lived relationship with the financially-stable Midlands club.  His move there at the beginning of the season was lauded as the missing link at an ambitious club desperate to land the Zimbabwean league title after failing in their two-year stay in the league.

Platinum, who have failed to win in their last five Castle Premiership matches following a promising start to the season, have been plunged into a crisis, with the cracks emerging following the lean spell.

The platinum miners, who are in their third season in the top flight, were seen as early season favourites for the title, but internal differences have seen their campaign go off the rails in recent weeks.

A statement released by Platinum club president George Mawere last night read:

“FC Platinum Football Club advises that it has agreed with immediate effect to release Tenant Chilumba as its first team coach following requests for his services by Power Dynamos of Zambia as well that country's football authorities where he serves as a member of the national team's technical committee.

"Since joining FC Platinum, Mr Chilumba had become an integral part of the club which he has assisted in ensuring that it remains a competitive top flight team.

"However, demands for his services by his country's national team have placed an overdue burden on his work schedule and made it impossible to continuously balance his frequent trips with the need to maintain the need for regular presence at the club he dearly loves.

"Tendai Chikuni, who has had a previous stint as coach of the club and was first assistant to Mr Chilumba will take over as cater-taker coach, until a substantive replacement has been found. Management of FC Platinum wish Tenant Chilumba success in his found team.” - Sports Writer
