MP arrested over death threat

MUTARE - Police in Mutare on Friday arrested Makoni South Member of Parliament, Pishai Muchauraya (MDC) while he was attending a parliamentary portfolio committee on Media Information and Communication Technology programme at a local hotel.

According to his lawyer Passmore Nyakureba, Muchauraya is being accused of having threatened with death one Amos Kutiya, an election campaign manager for Geoff Nyarota.

Nyarota is eyeing the Makoni South constituency. “The police accuse Muchauraya of threatening a man with death sometime in March this year while at a rally in Makoni South.

The matter is coming up now and it is a shock.

“He is being detained in the cells and the intention is to take him to Rusape where the alleged offence happened,” said Nyakureba.

“My client is denying the charge as malicious and only meant to disturb his focus on the party’s confirmations happening soon.

Muchauraya’s friend and MDC Manicaland provincial organising secretary Prosper Chapfiwa Mutseyami said the legislator was picked up at a hotel as he made his way to a meeting of his parliamentary portfolio.

“All these are mechanisations of his political foes who want to scuttle his confirmation as the suitable candidate for the constituency,” said Mutseyami.

Mutseyami said such tricks would not work as the truth will always prevail.

The MDC in Manicaland province was expected to hold confirmation processes yesterday in all the districts.

Muchauraya is a parliamentary portfolio committee member of the Media Information and Communication Technology which was in Mutare on a meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to take an audit of the media laws and the envisaged re-alignment with the new constitution. - Sydney Saize
