Man rapes girl in front of daughter

BULAWAYO - A Jotsholo man who invited a 15-year-old girl to his home under the pretext that he was going to pay her for doing house chores has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping and impregnating her in the presence of his own daughter.

Gibson Mahlangu, 68, who is facing five counts of rape this week pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Hwange magistrate Dambudzo Malunga.

Prosecutor Memory Munsaka told the court that on a date unknown in September 2009, Mahlangu approached the complainant who was at a borehole fetching water with her young sister.

The court proved that Mahlangu invited them to his homestead where he asked them to wash his clothes for a certain fee, to which they agreed.

Upon arrival, Mahlangu ordered the complainant and her young sister as well as his own daughter to enter his bedroom hut before locking the room.

The court heard how he then left the trio without a word only to return armed with a hammer which he used to threaten them with. Mahlangu then forced the complainant to the ground, undressed her, and inserted a piece of cloth into her mouth, before raping her.

This happened in full view of his own daughter and the young sister of the complainant.

Soon after that, Mahlangu transferred the three girls to another room where he detained them for the better part of the day.

During the night he reportedly returned the girls to the first room where he raped the same girl four times that night.

In a bid to silence her, Mahlangu threatened her with death if she told anyone.

The crime however, came to light when the girl fell pregnant and a police report was made leading to Mahlangu’s arrest.
