Warriors move up rankings

HARARE - Zimbabwe got a morale booster going into Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Egypt after climbing three places on the latest Fifa rankings.

The Warriors are now ranked 102 in the world and 27 in Africa after accumulating 350 points.

With the loss suffered in the international friendly against Zambia and a draw against Malawi, Klaus-Dieter Pagels’ charges were not expected to move up the rankings.

The Pharaohs, their opponents on Sunday, dropped three places from 68 to 71 and are now ranked 15 in Africa.

In their only game since the rankings were last updated, Egypt played to a one all draw against Botswana in a friendly international on Tuesday.

Though the match is a dead-rubber World Cup qualifier as the Warriors are rooted at the bottom of Group G with just a single point, victory against the Pharoahs will see the Warriors accumulate more points.

Ivory Coast remained Africa’s top-ranked team on the global rankings on position 13 followed by Ghana on position 21.

There was little movement in the world’s top 10  with world champions Spain staying top of the rankings while Germany are number two with South American giants Argentina  occupying third place.
