Suspected armed soldier runs amok

HARARE - A suspected armed soldier has gone berserk terrorising supporters of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC in Gokwe as the country hurtles towards watershed harmonised elections expected sometime this year.

MDC supporters in Mapfungautsi constituency’s Ganyungu village told the Daily News they were living in fear after the suspected soldier only identified as Magwizi ran amok forcing MDC supporters to lie down military-style chanting Zanu PF slogans.

Mike Musandipa who will represent MDC in ward 23 council election says Magwizi has been chasing his party candidates since the party held primary elections in the area last week.

“Since I was pronounced ward 23 candidate I have not slept at home because of Magwizi.

“Another candidate Kelvin Lunga of ward 33 was caught on Saturday and made to toyi-toyi the whole night at gun point chanting Zanu PF slogans. He was only rescued by the local police who called Gokwe Police station but I know he (Magwizi) is still looking for me. We only hope the police will apprehend him and bring him to book otherwise we will not be able to campaign in Gokwe because the man can do anything,” said Musandipa.

Officer commanding Gokwe district Tedius Madondo confirmed the development.

“The case is being investigated at the moment. I have already dispatched a team of police details to apprehend the man who is reportedly armed. We want to warn the public that we have zero tolerance to any form of violence, political or otherwise. Anyone caught on the wrong side of the law will be brought to book,” said Madondo. -
