Zvorwadza's political violence trial closes

HARARE - The trial of Sten Zvorwadza, who lost to former radio personality Eric Knight in MDC primaries for Mbare Constituency closed yesterday with State witnesses giving contradictory statements.

Zvorwadza is facing charges of causing political violence in the constituency.

He is jointly charged with five other MDC members for breaching the Electoral Act.

They are charged with violence that flared after a clash caused by the pasting of posters at Nenyere flats on the eve of the referendum in March.

The defence lawyer Marufu Mandevere applied for discharge of his clients so that they cannot be put to their defence.

Edmore Mubaiwa, the last State witness contradicted other State witnesses namely Plaxedes Jaravaza alias Mbuya Nehanda and Gorden Chipanda — all Zanu PF supporters.

Jaravaza and Chipanda claimed that a group of 16 MDC supporters attacked them, whilst Mubaiwa said he only saw two women dressed in red attacking Jaravaza.

Mbare magistrate Stan Mambanje will deliver his ruling on the matter on June 17.
