Rapist caged for 13 years

HARARE - A Harare man who raped a woman after she had turned down his proposal has been slapped with a 13-year jail term.

George Kanosawa, 28, of Chitungwiza was initially sentenced to 17 years in prison by regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya, but four years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

The court heard that on February 19 this year, Kanosawa arrived at the woman’s house and was admitted into the house as usual.

Kanosawa then proposed love to the Matererini Flats resident who shot down the proposal.

But the man was adamant and took her mobile phone number in the process.

Facts are that Kanosawa, who was sitting opposite the woman, suddenly stood up and advanced towards her before pulling her into her bedroom.

He then pushed her down on the bed. In the ensuing struggle, the man tore her top and skirt.

It is the State’s case that Kanosawa raped the woman and after the ordeal he left her in the house crying.

The woman called her sister who accompanied her to Matapi Police Station to make a report. - Helen Kadirire
