Man on trial for girlfriend's murder

HARARE - The trial of Pritchard Zimondi, who allegedly killed his girlfriend, has opened at the High Court.

Zimondi has been on remand for over a year after his trial was postponed on several occasions for different reasons.

Prosecutor Editor Mavuto told High Court Judge Hlekani Mwayera that the fatal incident took place after Zimondi had a misunderstanding with his 19-year-old girlfriend then, Monalisa Chinomona in April last year.

However, Zimondi, through his lawyer Norman Mugiya, denied the allegations and told the court one of Chinomona’s boyfriends, whom he once clashed with, was the one who killed her.

His friend Simbarashe Piyano was the first to give evidence yesterday.

He told the court he came to know of the murder through his girlfriend Primrose, who was Chinomona’s friend.

Allegations are that on the fateful day, Zimondi went over to Chinomona’s place where she was alone in her bedroom.

He allegedly stabbed Chinomona with a kitchen knife on her left breast.

After the act, Zimondi reportedly fled from the scene and left the knife stuck on Chinomona’s breast.
He was later arrested in Harare.

The court heard that Chinomona’s body was discovered by her brother Tanyaradzwa and had several stab wounds.

Tanyaradzwa reported the matter to the police, leading to Zimondi’s arrest.

When Zimondi was arrested, he was found in possession of Chinomona’s pant and bra, the court heard.

According to a post mortem report, Chinomona died as a result of hypovolemic shock, caused by a perforated lung and heart stab wounds. - Tendai Kamhungira
