Star FM DJ Munya arrested

HARARE - Radio personality Munyaradzi Milimo aka DJ Munya has been arrested in a suspected kidnapping case in which a Harare man went missing before dying yesterday morning.

Ortneal Tinashe Magorimbo, 26, had been reported missing since last Monday.

He was reported missing at Harare Central Office under Crime Report No. 051498 last Thursday.

DJ Munya was arrested on Friday after he allegedly “confessed” to knowing the whereabouts of Magorimbo.

The DJ is employed by Star FM, a radio station run by the State-owned Zimpapers, publishers of The Herald and eight other newspaper titles.

A detective working on the case identified as Kachidza confirmed the arrest but could not shed more light.

“We still have him detained,” Kachidza said on Saturday night at West End Clinic where Magorimbo had been hospitalised.

DJ Munya was arrested before Magorimbo was found.

Hospital authorities at the West End Clinic, where Magorimbo died, told the Daily News they suspected he had died from a dose of a pesticide which he might have been forced to consume.

Since Magorimbo went missing, his wife Millicent Chimbadza has been collaborating with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers who had been looking for leads on the bizarre case that has left residents at his Herbert Chitepo and Blackistone Avenue flat shocked.

Magorimbo, who worked for the Public Service Medical Insurance, had taken a day off on the fateful Monday and had been home alone.

His wife says when she came back in the afternoon she could not find him home, but thought he could be somewhere.

She, however, recalls: “When I arrived home I noticed some strange bluish liquids in the bathroom. We had not been using the toilet for some time because there had been no water, so we used to keep the toilet clean and used toilets elsewhere. But when I came in the bathroom there was a bit of mess and some smelly substance.”

She said her husband had been missing until Wednesday.

“On Thursday, we made a report to the police, since then we had been working with the police for leads which were not forthcoming until DJ Munya came to the flat and confessed to our neighbour that he knew where my husband was.”

A neighbour of Magorimbo said DJ Munya came asking for someone who worked at Baines Hospital.

“DJ Munya frequents this place and is popular here. I told him that there were nurses and other people who worked at Baines, hence could not guess which one he was referring to. I asked him if he did not have a photo of the person, after which he pulled his cell-phone and showed me a photo of Magorimbo.”

The neighbour said she was shocked to see the photograph of the person they were looking for.

“DJ Munya then said he wanted to see Magorimbo’s wife because he wanted to speak to her. I called Millicent and she came and talked to DJ Munya while I went to the shops.

“I do not know what they discussed but their discussion was so brief when I came back they had already finished.”

The woman said DJ Munya boastfully told her before he left that he knew where Magorimbo was.

“He said Magorimbo was fine and would come back the next day (Friday) before 4pm. I was convinced DJ Munya knew where Magorimbo was and convinced his wife to report him to the police as a suspect.”
