Mutodi's offices raided

HARARE - Police’s Serious Fraud squad descended on the Harare offices of flamboyant rhumba and sungura musician Energy Mutodi on Friday in search of documents in their investigation into suspected fraud at his property firm National Housing and Development Trust (NHDT).

Harare police spokesperson Tadius Chibanda referred questions about the raid to the CID spokesperson Sharon Musendo who said she was not on duty over the weekend and did not have details of the raid, but the Daily News heard that officers seized computers and customer files from NHDT offices.

The arrival of detectives from Ahmed House at the Social Security Centre-based offices of the NHDT on Friday came a day after police raided NHDT’s Mutare offices and also seized computers and files, according to Mutodi.

One NDHT staff member was said to have been detained for hours.

A fuming Mutodi, who is seeking a legislative seat on a Zanu PF ticket and wants to depose Goromonzi Zanu PF MP Beater Nyamupinga, alleged the crackdown was political.

The raid on his offices comes hardly a week after two heavily-built menacing men threatened to force their way into his Charlotte Brooke home in what he claimed was an escalating fight for Goromonzi Constituency.

“It’s a well-orchestrated move to cripple the organisation and scuttle my electoral bid,” Mutodi told the Daily News yesterday.

“They want to ensure that by the time we go to primary elections, they would have fixed me with fictitious charges.”

Mutodi alleged last week there was a conspiracy between provincial chairman Ray Kaukonde and Nyamupinga to bar him from standing in the primaries, an allegation rubbished by Kaukonde. - Staff Writer
