Lecturer jailed for insulting Mugabe

MASVINGO - A Great Zimbabwe University lecturer was yesterday slapped with a three-month jail term for saying President Robert Mugabe was a “dirty old rotten donkey” which should be thrown in the rubbish bin.

Chenjerai Pamhiri, 38, a Heritage Studies tutor at the State-owned university appeared before Masvingo magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso, who convicted him for insulting the office and person of the president.

Pamhiri uttered the insults at OK supermarket in the city centre on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Tafirei Tandi told the court that Pamhiri, who was doing his shopping on May 14, shouted on top of his voice insulting the president.

The court also heard that he went at the till and shouted in the local language saying, “Mugabe wenyu itsvina, anofanirwa kuraswa mubin. Idhongi rachembera, rakaora, rinoda kukandwa mubin, achembera, musamuvhotera. Vhoterai Morgan Tsvangirai mwana waQueen”— loosely translated: “Your Mugabe is dirty and should be thrown into the dusty bin, he is an old rotten donkey don’t vote for him instead vote for Morgan Tsvangirai the son of the Queen.”

He further insulted the president on his way out of the shop after paying for his groceries and was intercepted by police who arrested him.

Philip Tanaka Shumba, of Mutendi and Shumba law firm said he will appeal against the sentence and conviction.

“I have been instructed to represent him by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights and we are preparing to appeal against both the sentence and conviction,” Shumba said. - Godfrey Mtimba
