Dynamos stretch dominance

HARARE - Devon Chafa’s first half penalty was enough for Dynamos to extend their dominance over city rivals CAPS United yesterday.

The 19-time Zimbabwean champions, who last lost to the Green Machine back in 2009, continue to close the gap between them and the leading teams with a win in this lacklustre Castle Premiership Harare derby.

CAPS, who appeared the better side of the afternoon overall, were left cursing their luck when fullback Ronald Pfumbidzai needlessly fouled Clive Kawinga in the box to concede a penalty on 26 minutes.

Midfielder Chafa’s well-struck penalty sent Tafadzwa Dube the wrong way.

After the goal, the defending champions went on to dominate the remainder of the half and could so easily have extended their lead by at least two goals, but outstanding Tawanda Muparati, forward Kawinga the out-of-form Washington Pakamisa all came agonisingly close.

With that, Dynamos have cut FC Platinum’s lead at the top to just three points.

CAPS, who played a lot better in the second half, could have salvaged a point at the death after captain Tawanda Kumbuyani’s header hit the post.

Having trailed from the first half, CAPS upped the tempo in the second period, but failed to create clear-cut chances due to a midfield which played second fiddle to Dynamos.

Reliable midfielder Hardlife Zvirekwi had a quiet afternoon and was duly substituted for Moses Muchenje on 74 minutes.

On the few occasions they came close, CAPS strikers Dominic Chungwa and Tawanda Nyamandwe either directed their efforts wide or shot straight to goalkeeper George Chigova.

United’s best chance of the game fell to Nyamandwe in the 75th minute. The former Monomotapa striker shot weakly at Chigova after receiving an inviting cross from Khumbuyani on the right.
