MPs demand fresh voter registration

HARARE - Members of Parliament yesterday agreed that a new mobile voter registration exercise should be carried out countrywide to ensure that every citizen is allowed to register to vote.

Legislators across the political divide supported the motion moved by Settlement Chikwinya MDC MP for Mbizo, who asked government to restart the mobile voter registration which began on April 29 and ends on May 19.

Chkwinya said the registration had not adequately been advertised and that not enough centres have been provided for.

He encouraged minister of Finance Tendai Biti to provide adequate funding of the programme.

“We want government to extend the time for the mobile voter registration as many people are being left out in the programme which is currently taking place as there is no voting registration centres in the wards,” Chikwinya said.

He supported the call by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson Rita Makarau for a fresh mobile voter registration.

The new Zimbabwe constitution which was passed by Parliament this week provides for a 30-day voter registration.
